For 55 EUR and 3 stars, the hotel was more than ok. It is in easy walking distance from the main station (although there are closer ones still), unfortunately, there seems to be no bus stop near. The noisy road outside did not bother me, I preferred the front room because there is a bit of a cathedral view. The room was booked as a single, but it was actually a double, and the size was fine. The bathroom was probably the tiniest I have ever seen, but new and clean (the whole hotel was refurbished in March 2007, so everything is still fresh). The window was strangely low, started at knee-height and ended at eye-level (and I am not especially tall). The room was one stair up, no elevator. Tough if you have heavy luggage or problems with stairs. The bar was a nice room. They made me a cappucino in 30 seconds at one in the morning, and I could take it to the room. Nice! Staff was friendly. Breakfast was a bit disappointing, had to ask for cup, knife, butter, rolls - they hardly managed to remove used plates from the tables, let alone refill the buffet. Of course, the same person had to deal with checkouts simultaneously. Breakfast offer itself was unmemorable. Payment in cash was strongly preferred against cards.
Other guest were mainly young people in couples and groups of various nations.
Never heard a single bell ring. If that bothers you, Cologne is probable not the right city for you.
