“Great room, service and location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2013

Here's a quick overview of the hotel followed by some tips and notes on Cologne.
Room: Upgraded to a lovely big modern suite, not too corporate, pictures of the cathedral, Nespresso style coffee machine etc. No views over town but I believe some of the rooms have nice views. Only downside was no free mineral water, and 3 Euros seems a bit excessive.
Service: Good service and the lady who brought my welcome gift to the room was particularly charming. One nice touch is that the welcome gift comes with a boxed souvenir glass (at least I hope this was part of the gift as I took this home)
Location: Great location, 5 minutes walk from the train station and cathedral.

Directions: From Koln Hauptbahnhof (main train station), exit the platform into the main departure hall and exit the building on the left side where you will see a curry wurst cabin and a Best Western. Walk towards the Best Western- this is the corner of Johannistrasse, take the road and the Marriott is on your right.

Eating: Whilst in Cologne, I would recommend trying Der Hans Stube at the Excelsior Hotel- great food and service. Also, at the other end of the cost spectrum, the bratwurst, currywurst, bretzeln, and various bakery treats are always worth a try.

Cologne: Worth a visit with a nice old town, nice views on the river, atmospheric traditional pubs. Particularly worthwhile at Christmas for the markets or during the annual carinval.

Room Tip: Go for a room with a cathedral view.

This hotel is centrally located within an easy five minute walk of the Cologne cathedral and Christmas market. It has an excellent variety of dishes for breakfast and a good selection for their evening meal. There are several Christmas markets in Cologne and most can be reached in 10-15 minutes of easy walking. Staff at the hotel are friendly and obliging and speak English quite well. Be advised though, their beds are very soft!

Stayed in Koln Marriott for a weekend trip to visit the Christmas markets. We were guests of a Marriott Rewards Member that got special room rates including breakfast. As a family of 4 with young children, we always require a large enough room or as usual with hotel chains, we end up paying double because we are required to have two rooms. The least we could ask is for the rooms to be adjoining for safety and security purposes. It turns out that we were billeted in neighboring rooms but connected. Reception staff immediately searched the database for any suitable room. To our surprise, she offered us the best room in the hotel - the Dom Suite (presidential suite) - because it was the only one free during that weekend! We had to pay extra but I did not mind the extra pampering it brought.

We had our breakfasts at the Executive Lounge and we just had the luxury of space during our stay.

The breakfast was okay, a combination of warm and cold choices. The room service was very good portions - stone oven pizza was spicy! Staff were all polite. For a quick weekend trip, the Marriott is a good base to get to the Dom and the other attractions since it is walking distance from the main train station.

Stayed here for 2 nights with my husband and another couple. It was part of a 4 night DFDS package and I have to say we were thoroughly impressed with the whole experience.

The hotel is lovely, very nicely decorated, we had a large room, immaculately clean and a modern bathroom with a double shower. The breakfast was included in the package and was very good, although I wouldn't have paid an extra 27 Euro for this if I was paying seperately.

As others have said, it has an excellent location, 5 minutes from the Dom and the magical Christmas markets. We stay somewhere different every December for a pre-Xmas break and the markets in Cologne are the best we have seen. They do get very busy, particularly later in the day, but the atmosphere was amazing and the food surprisingly good.

We loved our whole trip and the DFDS package was excellent value for money.

When you sign up for a pre-trip excursion for a tour of Germany, you have to seriously manage your expectations when it comes to travel and hotel arrangements. Boy, was I surprised by this lovely and comfortable hotel with all the amenities including a spacious, fully equipped bathroom with a bathtub big enough for a long soak after a long day of Christmas market shopping and a bed that was so comfortable it felt like home. The staff, especially the bellmen, were efficient and pleasant. The location is fabulous -- two blocks from the train station and three from the magnificent Cologne Cathedral and Christmas markets. Not luxurious but perfect for our needs. Thank you, Viking River Cruises, for booking this hotel.

Room Tip: They all seemed to be fine.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights starting Dec 13 on our European Christmas Market Tour.
This hotel deserves the high praise from the other reviews.
We were greeted with a smile by Julia. When I stated I wished to check in she said that we were expected. I have been a Platinum Premier for 10 straight years and I have never received the personal attention that Julia provided. We were upgraded to a gorgeous suite. She helped us with area information as well as hotel enmities. Then she escorted us to the room to verify our satisfaction. Wow! She is the best ever!
The hotel is 1 block from the main train station and 3 blocks from the Dom (cathedral). Great location.
The lounge is busy on the weekend but the staff was quietly being efficient at cleaning and restocking.
I have nothing but the highest praise for the staff and management.
My only issue is the bed being a little firm for my taste but Housekeeping added a comforter to make it softer.
Would I stay here again? YES!!!!

We had a lovely time in Cologne during Christmas.

We found last minute deal and we do not regret.

Choose a room with views over the city and the river, and enjoy the service.

Plus: Location, service, rooms space, breakfast
Negative: Tiny pool for the hotel, we asked for double bed and we got 2 singles.

Room Tip: City and river side
