5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

We recently stayed for three nights in a superior double room and found the Domstern excellent in all respects. It is situated in a quiet street, five minutes walk from Cologne's main railway station which in turn is beside the cathedral. The reception staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The superior room is situated on the fourth floor and the hotel has a lift. There was a refrigerator in the room and reception supplied an electric kettle and cups when requested. We slept soundly, undisturbed by the slightest noise.

I fully endorse what other reviewers has said about the quality of the breakfast. There is a buffet containing different fruit juices, muesli, fresh and dried fruit, nuts, cheeses, honey, and several types of bread. Scrambled or fried eggs, with bacon, are freshly cooked; although I would describe the eggs as more of an omelet than scrambled. The coffee is good and strong and there is no problem getting refills.

The superior room is larger than a standard room and is located just under the roof which slopes down to the front window. I am just under six foot in height and Madam is a little over five foot. I slept on the side of the bed furthest from the window while Madam slept on the window side under the sloping roof. This was fine for her due to her stature, but if there were two tall people staying in this room then one of them would have to stoop to get into, and out of, the bed. This height issue only affects a small part of the room by the bed.

It in no way detracts from the enjoyment of our stay, but on arrival we were informed by reception that there was tax of €16 to be paid. Such tax is a feature of many European countries, but on all other occasions it has been listed at the time of booking. I feel that the customer should always know the total cost to be paid, including any tax, when booking. But this is a minor matter and I thoroughly recommend Hotel Domstern.

I had a one night stay at the Domstern as a stop-over while driving to Nuremberg.
The single room was perfectly clean and comfortable, and the shower was excellent.
The receptionist was ereally helpfull with advise on where to eat locally.
The breakfast was good, with a great choice.
The hotel is located a short 10 minute walk from the cathederal, and there was plenty of parking on the road outside the hotel.

Very clean, quiet hotel. Five minutes from station. Room very large, slightly dated decor. Very good breakfast - lots of choice. Very friendly and helpful staff, recommended a lovely Italian restaurant for our evening meal.

My husband and I stayed in this hotel over New Year and were made to feel very welcome by all members of staff. It was explained to us that the hotel was being taken over by the lady who owned another hotel just up the street on New Year's Day and that they hoped to keep disruption to a minimum.

The room was very comfortable although the bathroom and shower were slightly on the small side. In the information booklet we found it said that we could help ourselves to tea and coffee in reception but we actually had a kettle and supplies in our room. We asked for an extra pillow each which was provided straight away.

The hotel is a 5 minute walk away from the railway station and Dom and extremely convenient for many restaurants. There was secure parking across the road from the hotel.

The young lady on reception told us about the celebrations for New Year which take place on the banks of the Rhein and as it was only a 10 minute walk away, following our meal in the evening, we made our way down to the river. What a fantastic experience! Hundreds of fireworks provided by individuals (there isn't a formal firework display).

Breakfasts were good with plenty of choice and each day they served breakfast items from individual countries as well as meats, cheese, homemade bread, homemade butter and jams. They also made their own version of nutella.

On the day of the transfer of the hotel to the new owner, we were asked to go across the road for breakfast to the other hotel. We were made very welcome and the breakfast was superb.

When we arrived back at Domstern and went to our room we noticed that the kettle etc. and extra pillows had gone so as we were leaving for the day I asked the new owner if it would be possible for us to have them back. I said that I appreciated that they were extremely busy with the takeover and to be honest I didn't expect her to remember but when we returned later that afternoon, there they were. I was very impressed that even with all the upheaval, it was obvious that their guests' requests were taken care of.

We hope that all goes well with their new venture and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel.

The staff here are delightful and had plenty of time to give us advice as to where to go to dinner, what to see in the city and tips on how to do that. Value for money could not be better, and it is very handy to the Dom cathedral and the railway station.

Absolutely loved this hotel! Staff were really lovely and friendly and nothing was too much for them. The hotel was in a fantastic location only 5 minutes walk from the cathedral and the city centre, and despite its near city centre location it was unbelievably quiet! Very relaxing place indeed. Breakfast was delicious and fresh every morning. The room was cozy and the bed was really comfortable. Would definitely recommend this hotel and will absolutely return when we go back to Cologne. We went for the Christmas markets and we managed to see all 6 of them and I can definitely recommend the markets too!
