“Very pleasnant hotel in a superb location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2009

A very pleasant older hotel in an ideal location for exploring Cologne. The room was spacious beautifully furnished and so much better than the usual modern city centre hotels. The public areas were very tastefully done and the staff helpful, breakfast was excellent. The lift to the car park was a real adventure but very convenient as not many hotels did provide parking. The only downside was a lack of air conditioning which wouln't usually be a problem but it was scorching and even with the balcony doors open it was very stuffy at night.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2009

We stayed at the Coellner Hof for one night en route to somewhere else, and one night on our way back to the UK. On our outward journey, everything was fine. On our return journey, it was a disaster.

When we booked the rooms, we made it very clear that the rooms had to be on a low floor - either the ground floor or first floor - as my daughter cannot use lifts and is not able to climb many stairs. They confirmed twice, in writing, that we would be given rooms on the first floor.

When we arrived at the hotel on our way home to England, we found that we had been given rooms on the second floor. We pointed out that we had specifically requested, and were promised, first floor rooms. I explained to the receptionist that my daughter cannot climb many stairs as she has recently had an operation, but the receptionist said that "the man who worked this morning" had given us the wrong rooms and she could not help us.

Then she offered us a single room on the first floor. This was not very helpful as it was the double room (for my daughter and her husband) rather than the single room (for myself) which needed to be on a low floor. My daughter had to have her husband with her during the night, due to her condition, and anyway I did not want to have to share a double-bedded room with my son-in-law!

By this time, my daughter was very stressed, which was the last thing we wanted to happen. As there was nothing we could do, we had to accept the single room on the first floor. My daughter slept in the single bed and her husband had to sleep on the floor. It was extremely uncomfortable and he hardly slept at all, which was very annoying as he had been driving all day and had another full day of driving on the following day.

When we checked out of the hotel in the morning, he explained to the receptionist (a different one) what had happened. She was very unsympathetic and blamed "the woman who worked yesterday". She said my daughter should have used the lift - he explained this was impossible, as she is very claustrophobic, particularly in tiny spaces such as the Coellner Hof's lift.. We chose the Coellner Hof specifically because she was promised a room which did not require use of a lift.

To compensate for the fact that my son-in-law had to sleep on the floor, the receptionist offered to cancel the 8 euros parking charage. When he pointed out that we parked in the street, she gave him 10 euros off the bill instead. In my opinion, this was an insulting offer of compensation for a night of having to sleep on the floor.

When we got back to the UK, I contacted them to point out how unhappy we were with the rooms (we were not alone in this - another family, booking in at the same time, were complaining that they had not been given the rooms they booked.) The Coellner Hof did not respond to my complaint.

On the plus side, the breakfast was excellent!

Another hotel booked based on my research here on Tripadvisor led to yet another very positive experience; but staying at the Coellner Hof was the first time I actually thought about extending my stay due to the accommodation.

From the moment we walked into the large yet cosy and nicely decorated reception area and were greeted with a friendly smile, we felt that the staff at the Coellner Hof must be doing something right.

Both our rooms - I had booked one double and one twin room - were rather large, extremely comfortable and tastefully decorated; there was a really nice sitting area in the double room, while the bathrooms were welcome-to-eat-your-dinner-on-this clean and very spacious, with separate bath, shower and toilet.
If I were to criticise anything about the Coellner Hof - and I had to think long and hard about it - it would be the fact that the motion-sensored lights in the bathroom took rather long to go out and that is not very planet-friendly.

The hotel enjoys an almost perfect location in Cologne, the S-bahn stop Koeln Hansaring is 2 minutes away; this is the last stop on the airport line (S13 train) - which comes very handy when arring or departing - and only 1 stop away from the Hauptbahnhof/Dome - Cologne's centre in every respect.
You can also access it from the U-bahn station Ebertplatz and, if you're travelling by car, the hotel offers safe parking for a very reasonable 8 Euros/day.

What makes the Coellner Hof trully outstanding in its league is the breakfast offer; now, when traveling in the German-speaking countries I usually look forward to the breakfasts -generally buffets and included in the room price- but breakfast at the Coellner Hof could easily become an addiction. From smoked salmon to fresh fruits and from bacon and eggs to cold cuts, cheeses, breads and pastries, everything you could possibly desire is there to be enjoyed in the delightful breakfast room.

All in all, this is a brilliant hotel that definitely exceeds its star rating and makes a great base for exploring an equally brilliant city.

We went to Hotel Koellner Hof in March this year to attend the Anuga Food Trade Show.
We travelled from Frankfurt by train and arrived at the main station with an incredible view of the Dom Catherdral. It is a beautiful sight to see.
We were able to take a taxi to our hotel, at a cost of 7 euros and received a warm welcome from the hotel manager and staff.
Our room was fairly large with a balcony, sitting area, desk and en suite bathroom.
It was so cold, we could use the balcony as a fridge to keep our cooldrinks cold! What an experience! In South Africa it is always so hot!
Unfortuantly for English speaking tourists, their is no English channels except CNN and BBC. We managed to hire DVD's across the circle down the road which we were able to watch on our laptop. We paid 20 euros for a deposit plus the minimal renting fee of 4 euros per dvd but it was well worth it! Keep your receipt for the refund!
You receive absolutely free WIFI internet access if you take you own laptop or you can
use the computer in the lobby.
We had the most delicious breakfasts in the mornings and in the evenings we sometimes used the restuarant which served hearty meals.
We had time to still visit the tourist attractions and we were guided by the hotel staff and given maps on how to get around on the trains.
Cologne is beautiful and I would love to visit this Hotel again.

This was my second two night stay at this hotel and it didn't disappoint. It is definitely not a "cookie cutter" hotel, it has a unique charm and well, the breakfast is why I will always be back.

Comfortable well maintained hotel. Good breakfast included. The staff were friendly and helpful. We couldn't have asked for any more given the great price. We found staying Sunday night was particularly good value.
The hotel is an easy 10 minute walk along a shopping street to the Cathedral and Main Station. The Hansaring mainline and underground station is just a couple of minutes walk away (trains from the airport often call at Hansaring after the central station).

We wanted somewhere reasonably central with easy parking - though there was no space right outside when we arrived so we had to repeat a tour round the one way system behind the hotel. Rather than pay for on-street metered parking, we used the hotel's own garage - you drive into a lift which takes you down to the underground car park (€8/night).

4th floor room was OK, easily big enough, and quiet, with some nice touches (monogrammed bedding etc), though the bathroom door handle could have been more securely fixed.

Breakfast nicely laid out, and very filling.

10 minute walk to Dom / station but only 3 minutes from Ebertplatz station on the U-Bahn or from Hansaring U-Bahn and S-Bahn.

  • Liked — Relatively easy to find, on main road
  • Disliked — Just a little outside the cultural centre
