“Wonderful gem, great location - during weekdays”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2009

All that is really important is good in this small hotel: beds, shower, superb breakfast, friendly staff. Room and bathroom were very small. It has an elevator (nice when checking in and out!) and a computer with internet access for non-laptop/notebook carrying guests. Located very near Dom and Hauptbahnhoff and a large number of museums, during weeknights this hotel is a pearl of sweetness with just about everything in walking distance. And quiet. However, in the weekend the pubs nearby take care of large crowds of loud people, and you'll notice it whether you want to or not. This is less of an issue when travelling with a child or with 3 or more people, as it seems that the larger rooms (with 3 beds) are located at the backside of the hotel. From our room we could see the Dom spires.
And if at all possible, experience a concert in the Philharmonie (the concerthall in the vicinity), it'll be the highlight of your stay.

Booked two nights here. Had a double bed room. Room furniture was a bit dated & worn, but the bathroom and bedroom were very clean. Breakfast room was immaculate. Service was helpful and friendly. It's a 5 min walk to the Dom, 10 to the train station and steps from the Rhine. Makes a nice home base for Cologne. There are a few clubs in the the neighboring areas but we didn't notice any noise.

The hotel was fine for the Thursday night of our stay and we asked to extend our stay for a further night. This was until we returned to the hotel on the Friday evening to discover that several bars either side of the hotel were in full swing with tables out on the street and music playing loudly-not a problem except that we had been put in a room directly above this and sleep would have been impossible and these bars are only open Friday and Saturday nights. No mention of this was made to us on check in although i had my mother with me and it was obvious we were not there to party. There are quiet rooms to the rear of the hotel but these had been given to a tour that had arrived on Friday and I was told we would "have to put up with it" and that we "shouldn't have come to Cologne if we wanted to sleep" by the Night Porter. I had no intention of leaving my mother to lie awake till 3am and found alternative accommodation to move to. Ireturned the following morning and spoke with the Manageress who was adamant that it was what we should expect from central Cologne on a warm evening but did reduce the Friday night charge by 50%. We felt we had been treated very cynically and while it is a very pleasant hotel i could not recommend it to individual travellers who wish to retire before the early hours.

  • Liked — General ambience/location other tha weekend nights.
  • Disliked — Outside noise weekend nights and cynical approach of hotel
  • Tips/Secrets — Avoid weekend nights if you don't plan to stay out very late.

We have stayed at this hotel two times -- the first time we stumbled upon it (what a gem!) and the second time we chose to go back. It's not fancy -- just a respectable little downtown hotel. The staff is so friendly and helpful. The breakfast is outstanding and the breakfast room so cozy. Try one of their newer rooms with the sitting areas. The rooms are so clean and the white down bedding is delightful. The location couldn't be better -- across from the Dom and the train station. We would go back in a second. Enjoy!
