In July we visited four countries in 18 days and stayed at 7 different hotels. By far, the Lyskirchen was the best!

We were in Room 208, which I think is larger and, being a corner room, has more windows than other rooms we saw while walking through the halls. We absolutely loved this room and the hotel!

The hotel is within easy walking distance to the cathedral and the Rhine is about a block away (we could see it from our window.)

The staff is amazingly helpful and speak English perfectly. Sebastian helped us with some complicated directions and saved us from an afternoon of frustration.

The breakfast is awesome! I promise, you will not come across a better, more diverse and delicious breakfast anywhere. Let me say - - Champaign and lox plus about 25 additional items. Breakfast is included in the cost of the hotel.

The hotel is clean, attractive, newly renovated and every room has a flat screen TV. Our stay at the Lyskirchen was excellent in every way.

We stayed in this hotel for four times now and we still come back. It has great personel and the rooms/appartments are very clean. We like to book the appartment because it has a lot of space and a little kitchen, really super! The breakfast is very good, lots of choices and always fresh. Also the coffee tasted great. That there is no restaurant is not an issue for us because there are plenty of nice restaurants downtown. It is always quiet in this hotel, not much noice from outside because it is located in a quiet street. Within a few minutes you are at the Heumarkt and there the shops start.

We like to come again soon!

Great small hotel near to the river Rhine and about 5 minutes walk from the old central part of town. Hotel looks like it has recently been refurbished and work has been carried out to a very high standard. Plasma screen TVs in the rooms and excellent bathrooms. Originally an old hotel so if you are allocated a single room as I was be prepared for a tight squeeze - a colleague received a twin room however and was very impressed. Excellent pool - refreshingly cool after the heat of a July day in Cologne. Excellent buffet breakfast and very friendly + knowledgable staff.

  • Liked — Great location
  • Disliked — Single Rooms too small
  • Tips/Secrets: — Ask for a double room when booking even if on your own

Don't be put off by the external looks of this hotel. It looks a bit seventies and shabby, but has had the full treatment inside. Reception is small and functional, but the rooms are really nice.

This hotel is on a quiet side-street yards from the Rhine. You don't get a view, but nor do you get any city-noise interfering with early-nights, long-lies, or hangovers !

It's about 10 minutes walk from the main Cathedral Square and the many bars etc round there. From the square head away from the river if you are looking for lively nightlife, with some pretty trendy clubs and bars to be found if you ask the helpful reception staff, but you may prefer to take a taxi as it's a bit of a walk.

The hotel only offers Breakfast, but this is a fairly comprehensive buffet and you'll find it hard to fault I'm sure. Try the Waffles and Maple Syrup after a large plate of eggs and a heavy night out.

Elsewhere, the food is a bit of a hit and miss unless you really (and I mean really) love Sausages. Or Pizzas. Stick to the Bier Haus places where the menus are simple but wholesome and the platefuls large.

The rooms are spacious and very clean. They have a strange arrangement whereby the sink and shower are in the main part of the room, and only the toilet is seperate. This may sound strange but the fittings are really new and it actually looks great. Adds a bit of novelty when your wife wakes early to take the first shower !

In short, this is an excellent base for exploring the city and we found it to be superb value.
