“Fantastic Value And Very Comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2005

Again, having read the first (and only) real review of this hotel, we headed here with some trepidation, but found that the hotel was much better than expected. The rooms, although small, were comfortable, with only a shower and no bath. The bed was very comfortable though, although the sheets and quilt were more for a single than for a double. We booked through Otel and paid GBP 34 per night, which included breakfast and seeing as though there were two of us in each room for three nights, this was tremendous value, when you consider that it was an all you can eat breakfast. This included cereals (Kellogs cornflakes, Frosties and Sugar Puffs) cold meats, cheese, bread, pate, preserves, boiled eggs, Tea, coffee, orange juice and a multivitamin fruit drink. I don't think breakfast is generally included, however, so you may wish to check when booking. It may depend who you book with. They generally charge 9 Euros for breakfast, but this is still good value. With regard to the location, it's a little out of town, but the superb tram/underground system means that you're never very far from anywhere in the city you want to be. The tram stop is a 5 minute walk away and isn't a problem, even with suitcases. To get to the hotel from the Airport, take the S13 Regional express train to Koln HBF. It costs 2,10 euros. If you use the ticket machine to buy your tickets key in code 2000. It can be confusing if you're not used to it. Once you get to Koln HBF, head for the underground, and pay Euro 1,60 to Barbarossaplaz. You'll see the hotel on the right as you come into the tram stop, so when you get off, turn around and make your way back along the track and you'll see the hotel. For what we paid, astonishing value, very friendly staff too. The only problem we found was that we were on the 7th floor and on the 8th floor they were doing renovations, and the banging and drilling went on until 7pm. Not very nice when we were having a nap after a long day's walking and shopping. Still, this won't be a lasting thing I shouldn't think, but if you're going anytime soon, see if you can avoid the floor below (or above I suppose) the alterations.

Stayed at this hotel last week- was leery as I had read a few mediocre reviews, but I was very surprised! The entire interior and rooms have been recently made over and were very nice- bathroom was a little small but very nice with shower doors and great lighting. Also, there was an AC in the room and I found the bed to be very comfortable. There is pay-WLAN in the rooms but the signal is weak. You are better off to use the free interst/business set-up in the lobby (complete with a printer) for free. The location is stellar- public transport, groceries, laundrette, dry cleaners, etc, just outside the door (at least within a few minutes walk). Highly recommended, especially for the price! I booked on the Accor Hotels web site and paid EUR 59 per night (breakfast was extra, so I skipped it, so can't comment on that) and parking under the hotel is EUR 7 per night. No complaints from this guest!

I booked the Ibis Barbarossaplatz for a stag weekend (bachelor party) in Cologne. It was very cheap so of course we weren't expecting anything other than somewhere to flop, but we were still disappointed with the level of service. The big problem was that despite believing I'd booked 7 twin rooms, most of the rooms allocated turned out to be doubles - meaning many of the men ended up sharing a bed! When I asked for alternative solutions, the receptionist was rude to the point of hostility and refused point blank to check with the other Ibis hotels in the city for availability.

The rooms themselves were adequate and the hotel has free internet access. Breakfast is a better-than-average buffet (which costs extra on top of the room bill). On the whole it's OK as inexpensive, no-frills accommodation - just make sure the booking is correct. Speak to the hotel rather than book on the internet and make sure they send you confirmation.
