“Good, cheap hotel, central location (with some issues)”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2014

We stayed for three nights in this hotel in May. It took us about 20min to walk there from the train station, though we could have also taken the metro (a stop is about 50 metres from the hotel). The hotel consists of two connected buildings, which can be confusing at first. Staff was very friendly and capable, the room and bathroom much bigger than we are used to in hotels these days. Rooms were reasonably clean (could have been bit better) and maybe the interior is not to everybody's liking (English country style, well, what do you expect in a hotel called Ascot?) Breakfast was plenty and OK (continental style) and room prizes very competetive. Only possible letdown is that the hotel is located at a busy four lane street. When booking a hotel in a city, you should expect some noise, but it might be worth pointing out that this is no hotel located in a quiet side street. There are several night clubs around and next to the hotel. There will be noise during the night. When we were there, there was a 24hrs party going on in the building next to the hotel, with the doors frequently open. This didn't bother us too much (again, expect some noise in a city hotel), but could be an issue for light sleepers.

(BTW, someone complained here about heating issues. We did not experience anything of that sort. On the contrary, for the first time we had a hotel room that was not terribly overheated!!!) There is aircon in the rooms and the heating worked very well when we tested it.)

Room Tip: Maybe it's a good idea to ask for a room on a higher floor to beat some of the noise (we had a 1...

The Hotel is situated in about 15 minutes walking from Cologne Cathedral, just 50m from U-bahn station. The hotel building and the reception looking good, but the room numbers are situated badly because of the two building connected together. The interior is old and smells with smoke, the carpet floors need change. Room number was very cold (it was about +9 degrees outside, can't even imagine what happens there in winter), not cozy but had a good bathroom. Badly internet connection and normal breakfast, Not recommended to pay more than 40-50 EUR per night per room

Two of us stayed here for four nights over the cologne carnival. The hotel is located 3 minutes from the center on the tram or a 15 minute leisurely walk. Nearby there are plenty of bars and places to eat with places to suit all tastes. The hotel is very clean and the staff are extremely helpful. The breakfast is really good and plenty of it. I found it a nice touch to have pro biotic drinks included in the breakfast as they aren't something you can take away with you. The little touches make the difference. The room was large and spacious. The decor isn't modern, more antique but very clean. We are looking at coming back to Cologne next year and if we do will be staying here again.

The Ascot Hotel is very centrally located in Cologne. If you have business at Mediapark, or if you're looking for a hotel that's very close to the nightlife in the clubs in Cologne, this hotel is very convenient for you. They have good breakfast and charge a reasonable rate for guests if you didn't book with breakfast included. Some of the common areas of this hotel are a bit older and could use some updating, however the room was nice and clean. Due to the location of the hotel all rooms facing the main street (Hansaring) are relatively loud, so asking for a room facing the back of the building is a smart idea if you're a light sleeper. There are a number of clubs literally downstairs and right next door to this hotel, which means that it will NOT be quiet on weekends. When you come back late on a weekend night, you will likely find the hotel locked due to the party crowd hanging out in the entry way. There is a door bell and staff will open the door for you, however if a club crowd sound scary to you, don't stay there. If you're into clubbing yourself, then this is perfectly located for you.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the back of the building!

Used for business trip, good breakfast, rooms spacious but a little tired, limited non-German TV programmes, shower on 5th floor poor. Located on non-descript road, some restaurants nearby and only 10minute walk to tube station.

Arrived late evening and no problem, very good quick check in and told we had a room upgrade which was a pleasant surprise.Room very good with lots of space, plenty of room for clothes storage and a very comfortable double bed.Bathroom immaculate with excellent power style shower and again lots of space. We ventured down to the bar and had a talk to the barman who was pleasant and knowlegable and gave us instruction on where to go for a late evening meal.Following morning used in room tea and coffee facilities which was a nice touch then had a wander down stairs. The whole hotel is spotlessly clean and in very good decorative order throughout.Coffee in lounge also available if required as we didn't have breakfast.Overall the hotel is wonderful with very pleasant staff and we would recommend to everyone, there is a noise problem at night so suggest a rear facing room.

Room Tip: ask for a rear room if possible

We stayed here for one night and the hotel is in a good location; it is a couple of minutes walk to two underground stations and the underground station Friesenplatz will take you into the centre quickly, however this hotel is about 10-15 minute walk to the cathedral in the centre of town anyway so it is easy to walk, which we did mostly.

The hotel is located on a street with loads of bars, clubs and resturants so it is very lively all night but is great if you want to venture out for the nightlife and only have a short walk home. We had a room facing the back so did not have any noise although I can imagine the rooms facing the front could be quite noisey.

The room was spacious and confortable, if not a little old, but it was fine and certainly good value for money. The staff were friendly and helpful and overall the stay was enjoyable.
