Hi, I'm going to start this review by saying that I originally booked for just one night, but I loved the place and the city so much I stayed for two (cancelling my stay in Brussels for this), and I've already re-booked for the same hostel in August and using it as a starting base for my next adventure!
If that doesn't let you know what you need to know, let me tell you more.
Upon checking in, I was greeted by a friendly lady at the bar downstairs who told me that I needed to buzz up to the reception on floor 4, and that they would bring me up in the lift (First point to note - security - you cannot access the hostel on floors 4 and 6 unless you have a key for the lift, or unless reception bring you up!)
At the reception, the guy at the reception (can't remember his name, sorry) was really helpful, I was too early to access the room, but he allowed me to check in and leave my bag behind reception so that I could go and explore without the weight of my bag stressing me out! He explained how the hostel and bar worked, opening times etc... and also went through a map with me, showing me where I needed to go for the sites I wanted to see, and how I should get there using the U-Bahn and tram service in the city. I said I might want to go on a river cruise, so he went online and looked up times and prices for me, which was great. Quality service, with a smile.
The hostel itself was super-clean, not a speck of dust anywhere. My room was amazing, I stayed in the mixed-dorm Roadies room, the beds were basically double beds, with curtains for privacy, and the lockers / cupboards were absolutely huge, which locked with a key you were given by reception, so you don't need your own padlocks etc... The beds didn't squeak as they are kind of built in on a wooden base (check out the pictures on the website, difficult to explain) so although I was on a bottom bunk, with someone on the bed on top, I couldn't even notice that they were there! Which led to a perfect night sleep. Your bed comes with a power socket, a reading light, and a shelf above your head as well. Couldn't really ask for anything more in the room!
The bar downstairs was amazing, they have a seperate smoking room for those who don't like to go outside (apparently this is legal in germany, a number of bars allowed smoking, i think it's dependent on room size), table tennis table, themed seating areas. They even had a VW golf campervan with seats actually inside the bar for a cool experience. The bar staff are all friendly, prices are cheap (I reccomend trying the local beer, served from a barrel in the evenings, can't remember the name but it was good!)
Location-wise it's perfectly located for Rudoflplatz Tram and U-Bahn stations, which means you can access the rest of the city pretty easily, I think from memory it was less than 15 minutes to the zoo, less than 10 minutes from the Cathedral / river and train station, and the main shopping areas were easily within 5-10 minutes wlaking distance.
I think this hostel suits solo travellers as it's so easy to meet people, and everyone is really friendly. Can't imagine what it would be like to stay in a mixed dorm if you're in a couple, so can't explain that, but if you're a solo traveller staying in Cologne, if you don't stay here then you really are missing out.
The only thing i'd say to be wary of is that you can't check out until 8am (no staff between 2am and 8am) so if you need to get an early train or flight in the morning, remember to check out the night before!
Looking forward to heading back in August!
Oh yeah, I also left my jumper in the VW camper van one evening, I emailed when I returned from my trip, and they were more than happy to find it and they've said they are sending it to me in the post. Again, another reason why i'm more than happy to go back, they'll go the extra mile to make you feel welcome and happy!
All rooms are quiet, clean and spacious.
