“Not worth it.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

Stayed here for three nights. Slightly overpriced. It's like a student flat that's never quite clean. the kitchen is very small, and not really good for more than one or two people at a time. The location is OK, but I found it necessary to get the metro in to the city.

The breakfast provided in the morning was average, and more of a first come first served breakfast.

There's a washing machine, but no dryer (terrible in winter), and you're expected to either leave your clothes hanging in the hall or on the outside terrace (where people smoke) where anyone can access it.

On my last night at midnight, the windows were open as the room was rather warm (and I could NOT get them shut), and there were several loud people drinking and smoking cigarettes and dope just outside the window (where the terrace is). Furthermore, there was a bright light on the terrace that kept flashing at five second intervals (curtains didn't block out much light).

If you're looking for somewhere to have a chat and meet other young travellers, this is it. However I think there are probably nicer places.

Room Tip: Women's room is fine, but very close to kitchen/common room and the outside terrace (so it gets...

I did not like this hostel one bit. It's hard to find, the hostel is up the stairs in an ugly tower block and the location is bad. It's a good 20 minute plus walk to the center of Cologne. To top it all off the hostel staff is as unfriendly as it gets. It's also practically the worst rated hostel on hostelworld.com and I should have taken the hint!

I'd recommend Pathpoint Cologne - way way better!

Room Tip: Don't stay here!

I had a good deal at this place when my other hostel became too expensive on w-e. Ok, good price, breakfast incl. Large rooms. One excellent computer but no wifi.
Main problen: on the street side it is noisy so you must close all windows. Ok in may but...
I was satisfied with that stay.

It didn't look like much on first arrival but after spending a fortune at some hostels on buying all of our meals and drinks we found it really enjoyable to have a large kitchen area which basically doubled as the common room. We went in the low season so despite the fact that there was only one computer and no wi-fi, it wasn't a problem. The free breakfast went until midday everyday and there was free pasta and a tonne of other left over ingredients. We spent some nights in drinking in the lounge part of the kitchen and became friendly with everyone else there. Location wise was fine if you don't mind walking.

I stayed at Black Sheep for a night and am very happy I didn't have to stay any longer. Staff was very friendly and spoke English, but the hostel itself was horrible. The kitchen was overcrowded in the morning so I couldn't even get any breakfast, the showers were not lockable (all there is, is two shower curtains) and the temperature of the bedroom (dorm room) was comparable to that of a sauna. It was super hot in the room and I couldn't get the heater to turn off. I didn't sleep at all because of the heat, and the bed was squeaky and uncomfortable. I have been to far better hostels all around Europe (and Germany) for even less the price of this one. I will have to be quite desperate for a place to stay in Cologne before I will ever stay here again.

Sstaff are lovely, kitchen is equipped OK but overcrowded massively, only 2 men's toilets, mixed showers which flood very easily, beds are moderately OK, beds and bedding were clean, rooms are all themed crazily which adds character, lockers in rooms, no wifi which sucks, kitchen was filthy. For price it wasn't really worth it. Extremely noisy out of window at night 6/10

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012 via mobile

We stayed in many hostels across Europe and this was the best. Free internet access, great kitchen facilities, free tea and coffee, roof garden to chillout with other travellers and enjoy a social, book Exchange, a guitar to pass round and only 2 euros to do your washing. Central location and friendly staff. Loads of showers so no waiting around on a morning, comfy bunks with reading lights and great decor. All in all a relaxed and fun place to stay.
