“Typical German cooking”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

Set on one famous square in Bonn this restaurant met our expectaions: tasty traditional German food, good pils beers, typical nineteenth century furnishings. Service was efficient, but not really friendly. We have been there at lunch time and the restaurant looked quite busy catering a lot of elder people. Honest price for what you get

“Great if you like glass in your food”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

In Bonn for a wedding we decided to try what we hoped would be authentic German food in an appropriate setting, and this restaurant seemed to fit the bill. However the menu said nothing about the shard of glass which my daughter crunched on when eating the goulash soup. She had to rush from the table to rinse her mouth and we were naturally very concerned for her welfare. We handed the glass to the waitress who was mortified, apologised profusely and took the glass to show her manager. However, the subsequent attitude of the management was appalling - the manager did not even come out to make an apology and the only offer of compensation for a completely ruined family occasion was to deduct the cost of the soup, and a bottle of water which my daughter used to rinse the remaining glass from her mouth, from the overall bill of approximately150 euros! My wife was so incensed that she pursued the manager into the kitchen, but even then his only comment was that 'mistakes can happen', and that he had no authority to offer any further concession - an astonishingly complacent and arrogant response to a potentially extremely dangerous situation.

“Bad Beer”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

Careful when visiting the Bar/ Restaurant EM Höttche in Bonn, Germany, next door to the old Town Hall.
The serve a lot of Kölsch super and very good, but don´t order the Jever Pils at this bar.
Jever is a very dry/bitter tasting pils ( Herb in German ).
My beer was old and musty tasting. I complained to the waitress who said she just serves the beer and cannot do anything about it. The barman said the beer was good and would not replace it or give me my money back, another man sent his beer back too, for the same reason.

Don´t waste your money and drink Kölsch.
If you want to try a Jever Pils go to the pub net to the main Railway Station it´s a dump but the Jever ist Perfect!!!

Happy drinking

Stephen

“For carnivores”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

Very atmospheric restaurant with a big, meaty menu. Good beer, as you'd expect. Undoubtedly the best sausages and mash (and saurkraut) I'm ever likely to eat. Included four different sausage species. Thoroughly recommended if you want a real German dining experience. Right in the corner of the market square.

“Built in 1737 providing a traditional German menu in a wood paneled atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

Autumn has come to Bonn, with chilly nights and cool days, and a continued array of colors on the trees. We decided to take family to Em Hottche for Mittagessen and found the restaurant's interior inviting, typically Rheinish, and pleasant. We ordered both Kolsch and Pils vom Fass, which arrived at the table poured correctly and served at the just the right temperature. Our waitress brought English menus for those who needed them, and our order was brought to the table in an acceptable time. My wife and daughter-in-law ordered Flammkuchen with a cream base topped with onions and schinken. The crust of the Flammkuchen, once used to test whether the correct brick oven temperature had been reached, was perfectly cooked. The edges were hand rolled in a braided geometry, which is a very nice touch. The Flammkuchen was light and fluffy, a good complement to the toppings. My son a farmer's plate (Brauerpfanne) with roast Schweine, Bratkartoffelen, and a well seasoned salad. The portion was sufficient and the flavors were well developed. I ordered Reibekuchen (potato pancakes) with sauersahne (sour cream) and Lachs, which were smoked and slightly pickled with dill. The Reibekuchen were light and tasty, and well drained of cooking oil. Together, the dish was very satisfying.
The only negative we experienced was the relatively slow service provided by our waitress. Once our order was taken and our meals arrived, served by another waitstaff, our waitress didn't stop by the table to ask for eine mal bier until we were near finished. It appeared that the restaurant didn't have sufficient numbers of waitstaff on a Saturday noontime meal.
The overall cost of the meals is somewhat higher than other restaurants in the area, mainly due to its "tourist" position next to the Rathaus. Nevertheless, the quality of the food was very good, the portions sufficient, and the ambiance of Em Hottche made this a memorable afternoon.
