“Not worth the room rate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

We stayed 4 nights at the Pullman as we were attending the Belgian Grand Prix. We wanted a nice place to stay that wasn't too far from Spa. I reserved a deluxe room for €240 per night - no breakfast and was completely underwhelmed by the hotel.

To start with there wasn't a doorman we could see the whole time we were there. Just an automated door. The arrival greeting we received was lacklustre to say the least, though seemingly efficient.

Our room was spacious. My son's rollaway bed was comfortable. Upon further inspection, I was surprised to see stains on the wall. You just don't expect this a 4-5 star hotel. The furnishings in the room and the carpets in both our room and the public staircase are very tired. We kept or curtains drawn as the view was unpleasant. Another annoyance was our bed was a queen size, yet it was topped with two twin sized duvet covers. Weird!

As we are A-Club Platinum members there was a nice bottle of Evian left for us. Unfortunately, we needed a bottle opener. I requested this twice, but it never came. One night I was very thirsty and decided to have a drink from the mini bar. The only drink that didn't require a bottle opener was an apple juice. At check-out I mentioned drinking the apple juice in order to pay for it only to find out that the entire contents of the mini bar were included in our room category. I was very annoyed to find this out at the end our stay. I was informed I should have been told at check-in.

Housekeeping was inconsistent as toiletries were not replaced everyday, though it was clear the toiletries were being used. Turn down was missed one of the four nights.

The hotel seemed empty and was not very inviting. The staff never encouraged us to use any of the facilities or restaurants - thus we never did.

My last complaint is about the Internet. I didn't mind paying for it, but the first night I used it was extremely slow and the second time it didn't work at all. The hotel staff was aware of the problem. A hotel of this calibre should not have problems like this.

In summary, I booked the Pullman for a bit of luxury after spending our days at a wet, cold race circuit. I regret not booking the Novotel for less than half the price. At least my expectations would not have been too high.

Great hotel we had superior rooms which were large and airy plenty of wardrobe space, drawers etc.Bathroom was also a good size with a large bath and overhead shower.Bar was a real plus point and very busy for a hotel bar.Outside seating area lovely for a warm night.Buffet breakfast good choice and plenty of it.Staff very helpful and polite. The only downside was that they were re-doing the hotel garage which was closed so the parking was very limited.

Love staying here, very classy hotel, its always a treat on way back from business. Friendly attractive staff, superb food and the spa is outstanding. Sometimes a bit pricey but off peak you can get a deal. Only thing I don't like as a reformed smoker is the smoking bar which is the main bar. Not sure how the Germans get away with it as a number of bars are like this in Germany.

Room Tip: Prepay for best deals but you can't cancel.

Arrived 7.30 on a Saturday night. Was able to just hand over keys to the car and check-in. Luggage straight to our room. Freshened up and ordered room service which was prompt and good. Caesar salad was a particular highlight. Also able to order a different bottle of wine than the room service short list. Checking out the next morning, they took our luggage straight to the car, and we were able to walk into Aachen to see the Dom when it opened at 1pm before we went back to the hotel.
Only small criticism: when finally retrieving our car, the first receptionist was quite bewitchy and unhelpful. Her colleague intervened directly, and the car was brought around directly.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2012

Stayed one night mid week in a comfortable smallish room. Good bed linen, excellent smart bathroom and good wardrobe space - all things to be expected in this style of hotel. The building is a grand 19th century edifice, which has been kept up to date and smart without losing its old style.
The main areas were very empty, and so it was rather off putting to use the empty bar - I suppose mid week could explain that.
Breakfast was amazing,- the best spread of cooked eggs, bacon and so on, and cold buffet of fruit, cheese, hams, salmon, jams, breads and pastries, in a lovely room overlooking terraces.
The only draw back was the chilly welcome - no one came to help with bags from the car or to the room, and the car was parked in the underground car park but we were charged for this. We only realised that we could have left the car in the outside car park for free as we left. I think this could have been mentioned at reception when we checked in.
It's a 10 minute walk to Aachen cathedral and the medieval heart of the city, so that was convenient.
Altogether a good place, just mind the parking.

Booked this hotel with great expectations because of good earlier experiences at hotels from the Pullman hotels chain. What a dissapointment it was to be put away in rooms that are situated at back of the building overlooking the site of a technical firm. Work at the site starts at about 07.00 AM which prevented us from sleeping.Furthermore there were a clogged sink, and a loose hanging soap tray in the bathroom of one of our rooms. At checkout when we mentioned the above we got compensated with free parking. Should it have been a 2* hotel in which we have stayed i would not have written this comment but I booked rooms in a 5* hotel and that should mean a stay in the luxery segment. Sorry, but that is not what we got!
