“A great alternative to a long tour to Berlin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2014

On a recent cruise, we berthed at Warnemunde around 6am and had until 9.30 that night before we were due to set sail. Many passengers were travelling to Berlin on various shore excursions but we had already been there. Thanks to many previous reviews on TripAdvisor we opted to travel on the Molli Steam Train, and what a wonderful day it turned out to be.
It only took around 15 minutes to walk into Warnemunde town from the ship and we easily found our way to the Information office where we were given a map which showed us where to catch the 119 bus to Bad Doberan. The bus arrived on time and it was a very pleasant trip to Bad Doberan (around 30 minutes) - the last stop on the route is the train station.
Tickets for the Molli Steam Train cost us 27 Euros for 2 adult return tickets - NOTE they do not take credit cards at all, cash only. The train is so well preserved, inside and out, and the journey takes you right through the centre of Bad Doberan town, passed lovely countryside and Baltic seaside towns. We got off the train at Kuhlungborn station and walked down to the seaside. There are lots of lovely restaurants and hotels along the Esplanade, you can sit and look out over the Baltic, or you can have a swim (some people were brave enough but it was too cold for us) or a walk along the beach. After spending an hour or so there we caught the train back to Bad Doberan, but instead of taking the bus back to Warnemunde, we caught a train to Rostock and then changed to a train bound for Warnemunde, a five minute walk to the ship.

“It was a hot day and the train was crowded”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2014

The train was very crowded as there was a festival going along the track. The train reminded me of the Petticoat Junction TV show. It was cute and had it not been so hot and crowded it would have a nice way to spend the afternoon.

“Steam Powered Commuter Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2014

I’m a train buff, my wife is not, but we both enjoyed it. We came in on a cruise and had heard about the train. As another reviewer stated with didn’t like the idea of spending 6 hours traveling to spend 6 hours in Berlin. We got off the boat and visited the local tourist office. Just in town a block from the bridge leading to the ship’s pier. We were told that a city bus, about 4-6 block walk. We had to wait almost two hours for the bus. It normally goes every hour but it was a holiday. The suburban buss takes you to Bad Doberan. Get off at the Bahnhof (train station). The engine is coal fired steam. The train goes through the city of Bad Doberan right down the middle of a major shopping street. We rode the train all the way to the end at Ostseebad West. We got off and started to walk around the area. This area is a bedroom community with not stores of any kind. There was only a small train museum and a restaurant in the station. If you’re stuck the food in the station restaurant was not bad, but we’d recommend staying gon the train and going back to Kuhlungsborn. Kuhlungsborn is a beach town. The main street between the train station and beach has many places to eat and drink. On the way back, you want to get off the BUS just as you get into town and walk along the back tot the boat. Doing it our self was about half the price of the tour sold on the ship. Remeber to take advanage of the free tolets when you find on. A buck and a half to do your thing is expensive.

“I love it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

Catch the Steam Train in the town of Bad Doberan (the Train ride from Rostock Central Station is about 15 minutes only). The Molli leaves in Bad Doberan and stops in Heiligendamm and Kuehlungsborn, two seaside resorts. While Heiligendamm is a beautiful but somewhat sleepy place, Kuehlungsborn has lots of restaurants, cafes and shops and a big yachting marina. Both are beautiful places but very different.
