On a recent cruise, we berthed at Warnemunde around 6am and had until 9.30 that night before we were due to set sail. Many passengers were travelling to Berlin on various shore excursions but we had already been there. Thanks to many previous reviews on TripAdvisor we opted to travel on the Molli Steam Train, and what a wonderful day it turned out to be.
It only took around 15 minutes to walk into Warnemunde town from the ship and we easily found our way to the Information office where we were given a map which showed us where to catch the 119 bus to Bad Doberan. The bus arrived on time and it was a very pleasant trip to Bad Doberan (around 30 minutes) - the last stop on the route is the train station.
Tickets for the Molli Steam Train cost us 27 Euros for 2 adult return tickets - NOTE they do not take credit cards at all, cash only. The train is so well preserved, inside and out, and the journey takes you right through the centre of Bad Doberan town, passed lovely countryside and Baltic seaside towns. We got off the train at Kuhlungborn station and walked down to the seaside. There are lots of lovely restaurants and hotels along the Esplanade, you can sit and look out over the Baltic, or you can have a swim (some people were brave enough but it was too cold for us) or a walk along the beach. After spending an hour or so there we caught the train back to Bad Doberan, but instead of taking the bus back to Warnemunde, we caught a train to Rostock and then changed to a train bound for Warnemunde, a five minute walk to the ship.
