On a recent Holland America Baltic cruise a friend and myself booked a tour of Warnemunde and Schwerin with F.O.D. Tours. Dave met us promptly at the dock with a big smile and great enthusiam that did not fade throughout the day. This remarkable man has years of experience in the travel industry and, with his partner Michael, offers an experience not to be missed. Dave has researched the area as only an American ex-pat would, his knowledge is amazing and he is eager to impart it.
The walk around Warnemunde revealed a sleepy little port with oodlees of charm and great architecture. It's history is fascinating and there are still aspects of the town reflecting its East German past. The stop for coffee and kuchen was welcome, we never felt rushed but moved at a pace that allowed us to get in as much as possible. From the greetings he received from dog walkers, restaurant staff and general passers by it is evident that Dave, who now lives in Warnemunde with his partner Michael, is a welcome addition to the community.
We took the train to Schwerin, an old Hanseatic city and now a UNESCO world heritage site. I will not spoil the experience for those of you who are booked on this tour but will say that it was a highlight of the cruise. I am a lover of history and architecture and in this small city you have both in abundance. The lunch was perfect, a charming old restaurant and theere was a choice which we had not expected. Being asparagus season the specialty of tthe day included them ( white of course) but there was also rouladen and other German dishes to choose from. A glass of beer or wine was included.
We were a group of 7 which was just about perfect. Dave is humourous, makes you feel as though you have known him for years and yet is efficient in getting the group around. I cannot commend his tour highly enough, if you have the chance to go on one of his tours TAKE IT! He also provided us with valuable information about other places on the cruise including a tour company in St.Petersburg called ALLA. Don't take the ship's tour there, we saw far more for less money and in a small group.
