“Fantastic breakfast, good location”

Moevenpick Hotel Braunschweig

Aug 13, 2007

Having had the dubious fortune to have to work on a project in Braunsschweig, I decided to try this centrally located four star property. This hotel is definately one of the top three hotels in town and I loved the breakfast. Though the rooms are pretty average and the service a little stuffy this hotel still ranks well above the "non branded" local competition.

This hotel is very conveniently located immediately adjacent to the downtown pedestrian mall. Plenty of dining options within a five minute walk from the hotel.

I booked directly with the hotel. The process was very easy and efficient.

Breakfast buffet is as good as any I've encountered in Europe. Hotel restaurant for dinner was also quite good.

Rooms were very spacious and modern. Beds were comfortable.

My kids loved the Haribo candy for guests at the front desk.

I would not hesitate to stay here again if my travels take me to the Braunschweig area.

“Fantastic!”

I loved this hotel from the moment I stepped into its charming, wittily-designed lobby with a cool long bar and clever touches everywhere, like a ring of green apples around the top of a planter and scads of vases on a console table, each with but one flower. [-]! Very cool.

Staff was friendly and helpful in English and German. My room was an absolute delight, very IKEA, very sunny, bright, quiet, well-sized with a safe, great storage and I couldn't have been happier my two nights there. I walked in and grinned I was so pleased. It had a great feel to it.

The hotel is unassuming from the outside, but super inside (though internet is very expensive and I stayed at hotels where it was free). The breakfasts were the best, most substantial and delicious in the seven 3-star and 4-star hotels I stayed in over two weeks in Germany. Wait staff were charming and the one lunch I had there was superb.

I cannot recommend this hotel more highly, especially since it's in the pedestrian mall area of Braunschweig and very, very quiet (I had a courtyard room, as well).

BTW, if you're tall like me, always ask for a "Franzosischen bett" in Germany which is German for a true queen bed, not two singles pushed together with a gap down the middle.

My company arranged for me to stay at the Mövenpick for 4 days while I was working in Braunschweig in December.

The convienence of the location is really great. It is pretty much in the center of downtown B.S., just steps away from the Christmas Market (if you're in town that time of year). The "Alte Wegg" tram stop is a few steps away also, in case you don't like feeling like taking a taxi or paying for parking.

Things I liked:

Washcloths (hard to believe how rare these things are in Europe).

The restaurant really is nice. I did a couple dinners there. Being a single diner, the staff made me feel very welcome and on the first night the waitress brought me some things to read while I enjoyed a gourmet salad. The second night I splurged and had dessert. Apparently Mövenpick is known for their desserts. My "Pralines Helene" (a sundae of sorts) was really really awesome. I was feeling fat after the yummy dinners so I ended up not splurging on the breakfast buffet (14 Euros extra, at least in the arrangements my company made) but everyone says it's great.

Things I didn't like:

Since it's difficult for me to sleep in silent rooms, I tried to turn a vent fan on by messing with the thermostat controls but the room stayed completely silent each night. That said, the thermostat controls didn't seem to have any effects whatsoever. I didn't touch the radiator so I don't know if it was emitting heat or not.

The wireless internet has to be the **most expensive** I've ever seen in Europe. 4.50 euros for 30 minutes, 9.50 for 2 hours, 22 euros (that's at least $30 at today's poor Euro/USD exchange rate).

Things to be aware of:

The soap you'll see in the bathroom is the combination "Shampoo & Shower Gel" big bottle. I guess this saves on waste (which, admittedly, hotel soaps really are), but I still personally prefer bar soap.

Excellent location within the city. Excellent staff & comfortable rooms. Breakfast buffet very good as well as dinner. Close to many good places to eat & see. Windows electrically interlocked with heating/air conditioning function. Could use a little better control over room temperature. Bar staff first rate. I will stay there again.
