“Basic Hotel with Good Facilities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2012

Stayed here when I visited Documenta 2012, ideally situated by the train station and tram stop. 10 minute by tram to the centre of Kassel. Hotel clean and has good facilities inc free wi fi. Staff very efficient, helpful and friendly.

As others have commented, the hotel is a bit tired and dated. It offers the essentials and is convenient to the main train station. I was here for documenta so hadn't been to Kassel. In hindsight to enjoy documenta, you probably need to be in the city centre. So the good things about the hotel, is convenient to station, very helpful and friendly staff, rooms basic but clean. I thought the hotel might be noisy, but you don't hear the trains at all and the street gets quieter later at night so no issues sleeping. Bathroom only has liquid soap, would be nice to have some other toiletries too and the mini bar is quite limited. I do like the sweets they put on your pillow and that they turn the bed down when they make it - it's a nice touch. I ordered room service and it has to be the worst burger I have eaten in a long time - McDonalds in the train station would have been way better. So there are not heaps of restaurants around the neighbourhood - the two that are nice are the Indian, Himalaya and the Chinese, Peking Duck. The hotel does give you a travel ticket which enables you to get to the town in about 10 minutes, but to be honest the restaurants in Kassel are pretty awful - so the two I have mentioned have been the nicest I've found.

Room Tip: My room faced onto the main street, it was quiet so not sure about the other side - which is more th...

The hotel is too expensive (€112 per double) for what it offers. Rooms are rather large, but also oldish. Breakfast (not included) offers all the essentials, but is very far from the variety that can be usually found in the German hotels. I would have given it 3 stars if not for their free wifi and a nice bar/restaurant where one can have lunch/dinner/drink at a very reasonable price . Would recommend a Suisse restaurant Matterhorn-Stubli nearby.

After 12 hours in the car, we were very happy to arrive at the hotel. The lady in the reception was incredibly service-minded and made us forget how exhausted we were. The kids were thirsty and suddenly there were fresh water and candies available. What a wonderful welcome. The room is very nice and they even have free internet and free minibar! Amazing value for money - you just HAVE to stop here!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2007

I went to Kassel to see the Documenta exhibition this summer, and was looking for a hotel not too far from the museum spaces. Hotel Kurfürst Wilhelm I is located next to the railway station, a ten minute tramride away from the city center. The tram leaves every five minutes. The hotel gave us a free travelcard, and a friendly hotelworker was very good at providing information about trams, buses and maps.

But: If you want to be located in the city center, chose another hotel. The area around the railway station has no interest, no restaurants, no museums, no nice shops.
Also, the hotel is very simple, the room was ok and clean, but had no bathtub, only a simple shower, and we had a hard time finding the lightswitches. The breakfast buffet was ok, but nothing special.
