My "toyboy" is a confirmed carnivore, so as a treat I took him to Surf'n'Turf on the recommendation of a friend.
The restaurant is located in Frankfurt's Westend, in the building that used to house Humperdinck - a 2 Michelin starred establishment. I used to live nearby, so knew my way around, but if you do not have local knowledge (as "toyboy" didn't) you will find the one-way streets and parking rather a challenge.
We had a quiet table in a fairly dark corner, but the whole restaurant is quite dark due to the wood panelling. The menu is obviously geared towards meat eaters of all persuasions, but there are some fish and seafood dishes as well as salads and vegetable side-dishes.
If you are unsure which cut of meat to select, the waiting staff will bring you a platter of the raw goods and advise on the most suitable cut for your tastes. The quality of the raw materials was excellent, as was the advice to have nothing more "cooked" than medium-rare.
I had the steak tartare with sides of salad and truffled mashed potato. The dish came well-presented with all the components available to mix yourself. The salad was crisp and fresh and the potatoes were delicious. "Toyboy" tried some (he had never had steak tartare before) and liked it very much. His choice was fillet steak with salad and chips, all of which were deemed to be delicious.
The bill was €100 for 2, which also included a large bottle of mineral water and 2 espressi. Pretty steep for one course each, no wine, but definitely worth it from a quality point of view.
This is not somewhere I would recommend for "regular" meals out, it is just too expensive, but for a special occasion it does hit the spot.
