What I like best about the Staedel is that in its modern art section, there is no fixed path you "should" walk. Overall, the collection is great!

“A fine art museum - loved the Albrecht Dürer Exhibit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2013

A great art museum with both old masters and modern art galleries. As you would expect, the museum offers many famous paintings and artists. I loved the Albrecht Dürer Exhibit which was well done. I also like the late evening hours that museum is open, so I visited the museum on a Friday night after a business trip. The only negative comments I have is the building layout with the flow, sometimes you have to double back to exit to another gallery. Also the Dürer exhibit is on 2 levels with the first floor exhibit seeming to be out of the way and isolated from the main part of the museum. The museum also has a well done new edition in the basement for the modern art paintings which was part of the recent renovations. But also seems strange they are still using a Trailer for Tickets outside the main entrance to the museum, you would have thought after 3 years of renovations, they could have designed a Ticketing and Info area in the new basement level.

“Amazing Städel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

The museum is an example of a perfect modern museum of arts. The atmosphere is so favourable for an enjoyable visit. And the choice is yours - old masters and modern art, there's everything here! There are also workshops and various meeting to visit.
We loved the design of the building. You don't really get tired here, and if you do you can sit on multiple benches, go to the cafe, to the restaurant and so on. The museum shop is great, too!
There were 3 special exhibitions running - magnificent ones, well-organized, with online tickets to be bought beforehand.
Don't hesitate, go there if you get a chance!

“Surprising”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2013

The average non-arty person (like me) hardly ever hears of this museum abroad. It certainly doesn't have the name recognition of the Prado, the Metropolitan, or the National Gallery, but as a city museum it is a pretty good one.

It is heavy on Renaissence and Impressionist work, with some effort made to find/display representative German painters. Though they may not be first-rank works, many Masters are represented in the Staedel collection, such as Botticelli, Tiepolo, Rembrandt, Raphael, Durer, Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Picasso.

Non-flash photography is permitted.
