“Well worth the visit!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2013

The house was beautifully restored and had an information card that dramatically increased the value of the visit. I felt that we were able to see everything in about an hour and a half and am glad that we did not miss it.

Don't miss the museum on the way out - it has a surprisingly good collection of late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth century art.

“Interesting insight”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

Goethe's home is an interesting insight into life in Frankfurt in the 18th century. Many of the exhibits were removed to safety before the bombing began in the1940s and returned once the house was rebuilt after the war. It is well worth a visit.

“Goethe House”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2013

Restored after being destroyed in WWII, this is an interesting place to visit. A bit difficult to find, since it's tucked away, but worth a visit. If you don't know Goethe, look him up and read about him before coming! Much of the paintings and furnishings are original despite the house being worked on after the war. Visit the house first, they do have laminated cards in a variety of languages so you read about the rooms on the ground and 1-3 floors. Very interesting to get an idea of where Goethe grew up. In one of the rooms, you can see where his grandparents lived, where his parents worked, etc.

The art museum in the next building over has laminated cads as well which give overall ideas of each room, but the paintings and overall descriptions in the rooms are in German, which isn't helpful if you don't speak German. Very interesting to get an idea of where Goethe grew up. Worth a visit if you can.

Note, the do have bathrooms here. Take advantage of them since you have to pay additional euro at other places in town to use the bathrooms...not here though! Also, if you have a bigger bag, be prepared to check it before going into the exhibits

“Getting in touch with Goethe's earliest influences”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

This is a beautifully restored home and a national treasure. Looking at the puppet theater that young Goethe used, and then thinking of the role of theater in his writings . . . Wow! Along with the house (check out the laminated guides for each floor close by the entrance), there is a wonderful collection of romantic paintings, and portraits of those who Goethe's family knew. In addition, there is space to write your own impressions and reflections in the educational center adjoining the space. If you like Goethe, this place is part of the pilgrimage.

“interesting but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

I expected to find out more regarding Goethe's sources of inspirations and in relation with his daily life, but all I found out was about the heating system, the laundry which was in huge quantities and other such things, very normal for a dwelling of the time.

Nonetheless, the guide was extremely entertaining (tour was in German) and I really appreciated it, up to some point.
