“Good hostel close to main railway station”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2011

The hostel is located just steps from the main railway station - hauptbanhof. It offers a decent standard of a reasonable price. The rooms are fairly spacious and modern. Linen and seemed to be clean, but unfortunately, the day after the visit I got a rash. Breakfast varied and good. I recommend this hostel has given people who go to/ from the airport to the train and are eager to see some of the city.

I travel quite a lot and often stay in budget hotels, but this one was pretty bad. It actually affected my mood by looking around and feeling like I had hit rock bottom. It's a dirty place with unfriendly staff. Most rooms share a bathroom with the rest of the floor and I had the sense I was in a bus station. The staff stopped caring years ago.
It does have free internet access, but it's painfully slow. Enough for email, but not much else.
The only good thing was the location, near the main train station. If it's a choice between the street and the Pension Alpha, choose the Alpha. Otherwise, you can do better.

I rated my overall experience above average, not because the hotel is amazing but rather it exceeded my expectations. The location is great for ease of finding it, and the fact that it is right near the Hauptbahnhof (main train station), which is where you can catch the Bohr-Omnibusse to take you to Hahn for Ryanair flights.

To get to the hotel, from the train station, if you walk out the front, turn right, and right again to walk along beside the building, on Mannheimer street. You will see a parking lot, turn left down the first street, at the parking lot, which is Karlsruher street, and it is just past the next intersection across the street, about 3 minutes walk in total. Note that between the train station and the parking lot, is where you catch the Ryanair bus.

The downside to this location is that at night sometimes sketchy characters hang out outside the train station, and the red light district is only a few streets away, but don't be too concerned, we felt pretty safe walking at night in Frankfurt.

We booked via booking.com for 45 euros a night. We had originally booked for 50 euros a night, but then a week later, I noticed it being advertised for 45, so I cancelled my booking and made a new booking for 45 euros (in that order ... cancel first), so if you book well in advance, keep an eye on the prices, they may go down. Both times I e-mailed the hotel directly to confirm my booking, because I had read on previous reviews that some people's bookings had not been on record. The hotel responded both times within a couple days. When we got there at night, the lady at the check in desk was polish or ukrainian, and didn't speak much English, fortunate for us we had a German speaking friend from Frankfurt with us. We paid prior to checking in, and made sure we got a receipt.

The pictures on booking.com pretty accurately represent the type of room you will get. The rooms are simple and clean. The pillows on the bed are these sort of big square flat things that you need to fold up to make into a decent sized pillow. The beds themselves are reasonably comfortable, we pushed 2 together. The lighting is somewhat dim in the halls, and the bathrooms, while functional, leave a lot to be desired esthetically. That is, they aren't very pretty. The towels you get are a step above sandpaper ... barely. The view from our room was pretty ugly out back, but we didn't spend much time in our room anyway. Early in the morning, people were moving around in the parking area below (6am) so for light sleepers not the best.

The breakfast here was great. After seeing what other hotels offered, this breakfast was practically a feast. Kaiser rolls, a variety of sliced deli meats, cheeses, sliced cucumbers and tomatoes, a variety of jams, juice, 3 types of cereal, milk and coffee. We ate a delicious breakfast that left us quite satisfied, the hotel gets top marks from us on this.

Overall, the positives outweigh the negatives. Great location, good price, great breakfast, comfortable beds. If you keep in mind you are staying at a budget hotel, not the Hilton, you'll be just fine here.

  • Liked — Location, breakfast,
  • Disliked — towels, noise in the morning, elevator didn't work
