“If all you want is a view from the room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2009

We stayed at this hotel because it was close to a friend's flat (half a kilometer walk) and he thought it would be interesting for us to stay there. The first word that came to mind was sterile and way expensive. The building is brand new and has a bit of snobbish attitude. Great for business travel if you have business in the immediate area but not easy to reach if carrying bags from the train station and trying to use the public transport. Use a cab instead. Hamburg is a big and busy city with many options for lodging. The sterile environment of this hotel is a good escape for those on business who seek some quiet. Easy walk to the river front and tunnel.

Relatively new, nicely decorated and comfortable rooms and bathrooms. The crowded fashionable bar on the top floor was no disturbance to the rest of the rooms

Just spent 2 nights on business and really enjoyed the hotel. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Room was great, proper shower and good desk for laptop work. Breakfast was good and the bar on the 20th floor has terrific views.
Very close to the Reeperbahn area which is very sleazy and miserable. Not good.

Just stayed one night, but it was a good experience. Staff were very friendly - room was clean and smart in a modern boutique kind of way. From the 15th floor the views were great and it is just two minutes walk down to the riverside. Would definitely stay here again.

We stayed 4 nights at the Empire Riverside Hotel, arriving on a Thursday and departing on a Monday in early May. It was the start of three weeks vacation in Germany. I wanted a Hamburg hotel with a view of the harbor/river and this hotel provided it perfectly. In the rooms categories they list a “Riverview,” which is the corner room facing the Elbe. As the structure is narrow, there are only two Riverview rooms per floor. We were on Floor 9.
Floor to ceiling windows made the relatively small space seem much larger. Several structural support columns occupied some of the available space. The room was very clean and comfortable. The bath had a large walk-in shower and a particularly large counter area adjacent to the sink.
With so much glass, there were very effective black-out curtains that would block of the sun if necessary. One unique feature that I appreciated, built into the divider between window panes was a shoe box sized door that allowed fresh air to come in through a grate. Obviously, with such large plate glass windows and so tall a building, you can’t open the windows. The “air hatch” was a great idea.
Regarding the location – for those so inclined, the hotel is certainly close to the Reeperbahn action.” The cross street – Davidstrasse, was a little seedy, with doorways filled with revelers from the night before on those mornings we passed by. The hotel is part of a renovation project that includes businesses, apartments and public space. Some of the storefronts were in the process of being set up and not yet open for business. In particular there was an Aldi Supermarket just behind the hotel. If you crossed this way towards Reeperbahn it was primarily residential area with several interesting restaurants. We ate in a Thai place and it was very good.
In the direction of the river, a walk downhill of about 10 minutes would take you to the boat tours and restaurants along the Landungsbruecke. Add another 5 minutes for the Sunday morning Fish Market.
There is no taxi stand at the hotel, but the front desk responded politely with requests to call a taxi. For our room, breakfast was not included – which for Euro 199 was not a huge deal – but it would have been nice. For the first two mornings breakfast was served in the hotel restaurant – very nice space, great selection, and then the final two mornings in a function room used for that purpose. We did attempt the much touted top floor bar/lounge one evening, but it was standing room only.
All in all, if you enjoy watching the river traffic – which we did, it was the perfect location. If you looking for a nice Hamburg hotel, the Empire Riverside might be a little out of the central area and perhaps a bit “too trendy.”

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2009

We stayed at the Empire Riverside for one night in July. We had booked a Riverview room which had the most amazing corner view from the harbour and bits of the city. Make sure you ask for a high floor! Restaurants, bars and beach clubs (!) were all within a 5-minute walking distance, so was public transportation. Secure parking is available in the parking garage in the hotel itself. Staff at reception were a bit frosty, bathroom amenities were sparse, but reception had most things available, it seemed. The decor is very trendy and there is also a bar ("20 up") on the top floor of the hotel with the greatest views over the city.

We spend only one night, but in a beautiful corner room on the 10th floor. The view makes you feel that you can step right out into the harbour.

The design is minimalistic, a bit on the cool side. But in the room, you really do not need any more design, the view is doing the trick.

The restaurant serves dinner with a maritime flavour, from harbours around the world. The food was imaginative and of high quality. Breakfast was offered in form of an extensive buffet, high quality.

Staff was friendly and accomodating.

The location is great, just between St. Pauli and Fishmarket and port, you can just walk to all nearby attractions.
