“German perfection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

Splendid top class hotel; friendly staff, valet service when you arrive by car, nice position, on walking distance from the shopping area (10 minutes on foot) and just in front of the outer Alster. Main attraction, their top floor restaurant, where breakfast is also served, with a breath taking view. My stay was flawless.

Room Tip: I had a room on the backside, on the 7th floor. No view to speak of, but very quiet.

I love this hotel during my “rush” business trip in Hamburg: after a hard working day you deserve a pleasant stay in the wellness center and enjoy the dinner on the top floor, where it’s also a pleasure to have breakfast in the morning. Rooms are very comfortable and quality of the sleep is excellent. Taxis are always available in front of the hotel and there's a direct elevator that bring you down from top floor, very useful once you complete the breakfast. I can suggest it also for vacation trip: it’s really close to Kunsthalle museum and not so far from city center. I’ll be back for sure.

We booked a deluxe room overlooking the Außenalster of Hamburg which was perfect. But try to get a room on a high floor as there is a busy street just in front of the hotel. The room was a bit small for a deluxe category and cramped with too many small furnitures. The bathroom facilities were ok but don't expect modern design. Cleanliness was just fine and but we didn't feel comfortable walking barefoot as the carpet had stains and looked worn. Bed comfort was good.

We used the hotel restaurant on the top floor which was very nice. Food quality was good and service very capable and friendly. A reasonable large breakfast buffet is also served there with stunning views over the Außenalster.

The 'spa' facilities didn't deserve the 'spa' label. It was very small and when full house, as we had, it gets cramped and you need to feel comfortable sitting close to your neighbors at the steam bath and sauna. The pool is small and only c. 10 long chairs were provided, insufficient to accommodate a busy Saturday afternoon turnout.

The location was good if you prefer to overlook the Außenalster and to be close to St. Georg but inconvenient if you prefer to be in the city centre which is about 20 minutes walking distance.

Overall, we regard the hotel acceptable and would give it a ***+- Rating.

Over a couple of years I spent in total something like 100 nights in this hotel. It is a very good hotel with nice staff situated directly at the Alster. Therefore you have one of the nicest running tracks directly in front of the hotel and you can enjoy a wonderful Alster-view from some of the rooms and the breakfast room. The bars are good, the breakfast very good, staff is friendly.

Room Tip: Rooms to the Alster have a nice view but are loud if you open the window

We stayed in Le Meridien just after Christmas for a few days of holidays choosing the hotel from friends' advice. We were lucky to get a room on the top (9th) floor with a private terrace, which was very stylish and spacious. It not only had a large bed, but also a decent sitting / reading area allowing to chill. My favourite thing about the hotel was bathroom. It had an aqua shower system, which was simply fantastic, and also offered a very cute bathtub for those who like to soak longer.
One of the negative observations was the cleanliness of the bathroom. There were hairs in the shower from a previous guest(-s?), which weren't removed throughout our stay, though they were pretty obvious.
The hotel only has internet in the lobby downstairs (still don't understand what a big deal it is to offer it in guest rooms). It has a decent bar with nice cocktails and snacks. We also tried the restaurant with the lake view and frankly had a disappointing experience. My partner's main dish was too salty and despite him saying this to the waiter nothing really happened. The service was slow, so overall an overpriced dinner, which didn't get high ranks.
The hotel is facing the larger lake and is probably great in summer. Staying in winter it's a bit of a gloomy location. You can still walk to the city centre and the shopping area, but it's not around the corner.
Overall, a very pleasant experience, though next time we'd stay somewhere more central.

The Meridien is a very good hotel at the Alster lake in Hamburg. The pros are the very friendly staff at the check in, the nice concierge an bell boy servicec, the spa and especially the breakfast restaurant on the 9th floor from where you have a wonderful view on the Alster and Hamburg.
The room designs and the hallways are disappointing, it feels a bit like Ikea, modern but defintely not 5 star.
Again, the great service level and the value for money makes it a good place to stay in Hamburg.

after a 3.5 hour train ride from Frankfurt we checked into what we were expecting to be a 5 star hotel...It was a bit of a downer , reception was nice but when we got to the 5th floor the 5 star became 4 star at best , a very ugly light blue painted walls with not so nice decor to match, our room was nice but missing the 5 star touch, looks great but far from great ...the bar and eating place on the top floor was very nice and hip but again they tried too hard to be different and got it all wrong...shame its a great location and the staff are very nice and friendly...and NO FREE wifi , they just lost my business for my next visit to hamburg!

Room Tip: ask for a room with the water view , if not they stuck you at the back looking into other apartemnts...
