“Christmas market in Potsdam and nice, short stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

The hotel is walking distance from the old part of the city, including the Christmas market. The reception staff was very helpful, the room (single) was rather small, but equipped with all necessary amenities. Breakfast spread is very generous, great choice of tea, jogurts, cerelas, fruits, hot dishes and cold cuts. Very enjoyable, short stay.

This is not a 4 star hotel. The internet does not work, there is 1 iron for the entire hotel. The sheets are stained and were never changed.

Mattress is bad, staff were rude.

When complaining to the hotel manager, she never responded!

Stay at any other hotel.

This is a nice old town villa style hotel with an excellent location to explore Potsdam without a car. We used bicycles which was a lot of fun to drive around without parking hazzles. The hotel is well renovated. The only little downside is the small parking garage, which is not suitable for SUV's like BMW X5. But there is a large Parking garage 2 minutes away.

My husband and I stayed in this hotel over the New Year for 3 nights, and booked with Booking.com. It is a small hotel, with an attractive lobby and bar, and adjoining restaurant. The very nice breakfast buffet was included in the reasonable room-rate for a queen double room. We booked garden view because of fireworks on Silvester, and it was very quiet and cosy. The room and bathroom were lovely, well appointed and clean, both not large but very well designed. It turned out we could not use the hotel garage because our car is more than 1,50 m high, but the alternative public Karstadt parking garage is only a two minute walk away, and even a bit cheaper. This was no real inconvenience. The reception was very friendly and helpful. We booked a 7 course gourmet dinner on New Year's Eve which was delicious and well presented, and which the entire staff of this 62 room hotel seemed to be involved in. It was over at 11.00 pm so we walked down to the Brandenburger Tor (the Potsdam one) to watch the extensive fireworks. It was a great celebration. New Years day was very quiet in the hotel, and when we returned to our room in the late afternoon after a full day of sightseeing, it had not yet been cleaned. The reception staff was very helpful in getting it done while we waited in the lobby, but it was really a bit annoying, especially because there were no apologies (I thought we had been forgotten), but were told instead that because we had the do-not-disturb sign on until 10.30 am that they had not had time to get back to our room since then (!), I assume that personnel was very pared down on the holiday. All's well that ends well, and I do recommend this hotel highly. Also, the location is ideal, Sans Souci, Neues Palais and the Holländischer Viertel are all within walking distance, as are a collection of wonderful restaurants. Potsdam in its baroque splendor is a great place for a long weekend visit. If we return, we will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: The inner courtyard is lovely, and the restaurant opens onto it. It must be beautiful in the summer...

We don't often have time to get away and we made a really bad decision by choosing this hotel.

Our stay started out really great - we enjoyed a welcoming check-in and found our room very pleasant. We received a personally signed letter from the hotel manager inviting us to enjoy room service and informing us of other services available to us during our stay. We were also helped with getting all our phones and computers online.

We took our dog for a walk in the city after we checked in and enjoyed a hot chocolate in the lobby afterwards. Whilst we were drinking our hot chocolate our small, well-behaved and fully house trained dog stayed on my lap the entire time and she was also on a very short leash.

We returned to our room at around 16.30 (with our dog) and decided on what we wanted to order from the room service menu which we had been invited to order from. We called reception to place our order and were told that we could not order room service. This alone does not ruin a a stay but if room service was not going to be offered, why were we invited to order room service in a personally signed letter? It was New Years Eve - no shops are open in Potsdam in the afternoon and no restaurant was able to accommodate us at this late stage without a reservation that had to have been made in advance.

We had no choice but to go out and see if one of the local restaurants would be able to help us, in some way. On our way out with our dog we were very rudely approached by a staff member who then proceeded to tell us our dog had defecated in the hotel lobby and that she had to clean it up. When we explained that this was impossible as we have been with our dog the entire day, who is fully house trained (and has been since she was 12 weeks old, some 4 years ago) was on a leash and who sat on my lap when we were in the lobby. We were very sarcastically told that it must have been some other dog that came in from outside and did it. No apology followed. We have travelled all of Europe with our dog, we always keep her on a leash and we have been welcomed every where we have been with her. She is clean, quiet, house trained and always supervised. We have never been accused of such a thing - especially as it has never happened.

We didn’t get a good night’s sleep because of the noise on the streets ’til around 4am and the lack of double glazing. We woke up feeling very much exhausted and rundown. Loud noises are to be expected on New Year’s Eve but giving us a room on the street side of the hotel, when we are with a small dog, is a bit of an oversight. Another contributing factor to our poor night’s sleep was that we were given 2 single beds, when we requested a queen bed.

On New Years Day, we expected that we would be able to, at the very least, have a relaxing breakfast in our room before we checked out. We woke up and found that no one had bothered to collect our breakfast request from our door, despite it being there since 22.00 the evening before. At this point we were not surprised but I was actually pretty close to tears. I cannot understand why any one wouldn’t tell us we couldn’t have breakfast in our room and I didn’t understand why the request was in the room if this is a service that is not offered.

The whole stay was a complete nightmare and there was no attention to detail. We felt completely unwelcome in your hotel and we also feel very cheated by the whole experience.

There was plenty of opportunity at check-in and at many other points in our stay where we could have been informed about services that were not available and offered alternatives but your staff chose to ignore us and our needs, treating us as if we were not welcome at all.

Lastly, when we checked out we were not asked about our how we enjoyed our stay at the hotel. We have had no opportunity to resolve any of the problems we experienced at the hotel at any stage.

We wrote to the hotel chain and were offered a complimentary upgrade on our next stay - BUT honestly, why would we ever risk being treated this way again, on our own dime?

The hotel is impeccable, modern, inviting, comfortable and very very clean. Perfect location: best restaurants and shopping just across the main street, and 10 minute walk from Sanssouci Park. I booked my room through hotel.com; and what a surprise, I had complimentary breakfast and Wi-Fi. The breakfast buffet was wonderful, combination of hot and cold selections. The staffs were very nice and friendly. I had a quiet room in a private corner, looking down at the court.

The exterior, reception area, restaurant, etc. give a very elegant impression. We booked a standard room which was simply decorated but with a large and modern bathroom. We were on the interior so the room was very quiet. The AC was quite adequate though it was the hottest day of the year There's plenty to see and do in Potsdam. The grounds of San Souci, Cecilienhof and other sites are free to enter, though the buildings charge a fee, A side entrance to San Souci is only about 1/2 mile from the hotel.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the Jaegetor are on a busy street so they may be noisy. The rooms on the interior...
