“Best Schnitzel in Germany!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014 via mobile

The food in this restaurant is excellent. They have the best Schnitzel in Germany and this is a fact. Very nice Kürbiscremesuppe as well. Totally advisable.

The service is also great. This place really takes care of its customers. The day we went there was a family with a baby that kept crying and shouting very annoying indeed and bothering everyone. They asked this family to leave the restaurant if they could not control their baby. This is being respectful to all the clients who were there and I definitely felt that I was being taken care of. Bravo! The waiters and waitresses make all efforts to provide a good service. I will definitely recommend it to friends and go every time I am in Berlin.

“Good traditional Austrian food, in a pretentious environment”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2013

I came here with family and had a lovely evening.

It was very busy- we arrived at 6pm without a booking, which seemed to shock the waitress. We managed to get a table, but the entire place was full by 7.

I went for the set menu, including a starter of pumpkin soup (nothing remarkable), the veal schnitzel (stunning) with a side of salad and potato salad (cold) and an apple strudel (good) for dessert. The set menu was 28 euros- by no means cheap, but significantly less than ordering three courses from the normal menu.

The wine list was on the expensive side, and all very Austrian.

Service was fine, but slightly haughty, and it took a little while to get the bill. The other clientele were rather pretentious as well- this place seems to be a haunt for the upper middle classes of Berlin.

“Good Austrian food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

This is a small place near the zoo in Berlin. Very attentive and friendly service and first rate Austrian fare like schnitzles, apfelstrudle, etc.

“Good food if a little expensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

6 of us ate here on our recent city break to Berlin. We had booked on the recommendation of a friend of my wife who had eaten here previously. Having read the mixed reviews on Tripadvisor I was a bit apprehensive but basically my fears were groundless.

The restaurant was basically full when we arrived at 8pm and it was clear that there were a limited number of waiting staff. Nevertheless while the service could not be described as slick neither was it ridiculously slow. We had an aperitif , starter , main and coffee and were out shorty after 10.30. This is not a fast food joint but a white-tablecloth restaurant where one would expect to spend 2-3 hours over a meal.

We all found the food to be perfectly acceptable without being remarkable (schnitzel was the popular choice) and although there were a couple of hiccups with service there was nothing to spoil our meal.

As with most restaurants the 19% tax on the bill together with over-priced mineral water meant that overall we felt the cost of the meal was a little bit high.

“Great food but poor service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

We had a 7:30 pm reservation at Ottenthal Restaurant. We were seated inside and chose from the light “Summer Menu” which included three courses. Both of us started with a cold cucumber and melon soup with goat cheese. My wife liked it very well and I tolerated it.

For the main course I chose a fried breaded chicken with a huge salad of greens with a few gnoc-chi. The salad was filled with nuts, tomatoes, blue berries, strawberries, orange slices, and other fruit. My wife had the salmon with apricot chutney plus a large salad but her salad didn’t have all the fruit like mine. Mine was delicious! For dessert we both had a Peach Melba with raspberry sauce and an almond cookie. Very refreshing and good though the peaches were green and diffi-cult to cut with a spoon.

While the food was excellent the service was extremely slow. We were there two and a half hours, leaving slightly after 10 pm. The waitress just didn’t do things promptly though she was not busy. Even after being asked for wine or the bill she would stand around for 15-20 minutes before getting it. So it was not a case of under-staffing. The German family at the table next to us had the same problem and he finally got up and went looking for someone so he could pay the bill.
