“Lots of character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2010

The lady in charge makes the place from being good to fantastic. With a very dry sense of humour she recomends dishes, comes round every so often to make sure you want for nothing, but all in a VERY relaxed way. The food is very filling and rather good old fashioned "Berlin" grub. Don't be put off by that, even the english taste buds liked it. The restaurant looked like someones dining room, although a lot larger. Very well priced.

“You know you don't have to die to go to heaven after all”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2010

Let’s be truthful about this: there aren’t many restaurants like Marjellchen around anymore.

Ramona, whose East Prussian mother taught her many of the region’s famous recipes, is the creative force. I witnessed her being forceful too. She (and she ensures her team) offers sincere and warm hospitality and unparalleled service. They are there to take your coats from you before you even get it off you. They are consultative but not pushy. Cashier charged us for two drinks we never had, and Ramona waived it and was so apologetic you’d think judgement day has arrived.

The ambience is in a class of its own. Impressively but not-too-poshly dressed tables with oil lamps contribute to a brilliant experience. There’s no other restaurant in berlin which serves the rich and fattish cuisine of the lost East prussia provinces – potato soup with bacon and shrimps or the mouth-watering duck recipe. Only downside…they should have added two crestor tablets on the plate to balance the cholesterol. You’ll be tempted with the beef tripe soup. I was. You’ll have to try the Cream Ham (East prussian temptation). The twinkle in my waiter’s eye was discernable as I wolf down the perfectly cooked slices of mild smoked country ham in cream sauce with fresh boiled potatoes and cucumber salad with nary a pause.

Visit this restaurant only if you love unsurpassed quality food and great service in a good environment

“Not a bad experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2010

Well it is certainly worth trying local food when you are in Berlin and this is not the worst place to do it! Healthy would apply to most dishes, but the quality is there and the funny owner, with an Italian name!, gives good advice. Smokers in the entrance and a quite depressing setting were not the best points but we nevertheless spent a good evening there... and left full enough to resist the Berlin chilly weather!

“Autentic East Prussian restaurant and great atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2010

Very authentic East Prussian restaurant serving great food. When you walk into the restaurant you feel like going back in time, just about before the Wall felt. The staff is very pleasant and smiling and they make you feeling home, checking details and looking after customers. The owner she speaks fluently Italian for some reason, and very good English and she has great character and funny. Definitively going back, perhaps with a bunch of friends or family. Highly recommended and must try for who wants to try something "local".

“Excellent German restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2010

Went without reservations but was seated quickly. It was soon obvious that we should have made reservations because the tables filled up quickly. Food was awesome...owner recommended one of the "winter specials," roasted pig knuckles...ordered with hesitation as i had never had that, but what a dish! This place is small but great food and great service...the owner was very attentive and made sure that we like both the food and wine that she recommended. Will return here without a doubt when in Berlin!!
