It's taken me a while to write this review as I was blocking this trip from my mind, until a recent visit to Berlin when I walked past here brought the memories flooding back.
We decided to stay here last year, it looked great from the website, with the lovely flood lit exterior and the location, we thought why not.
The staff are excellent, let me get that point out first. The bar and other facilities are great to. It's just the rooms that are a massive let down.
We had a standard room, which to a seasoned hotel stayer was by no means standard. We walked in the door to be greated with some type of construction which looked like a half built Ikea shelving unit and a clothes rail. A collection of wardrobe internal fixings, without the actual wardrobe. Who wants their clothes on show for all to see. We kept ours in the suitcase.
Immediately to the left was the toilet in a space barely big enough to get in to. The beds were 2 singles pushed together and then I noticed the shower and sink were right next to the beds.
I was amused to find that what looked like a nice frosted effect splash back above the sink, was actually a frosted glass window between the toilet the the room, that during the night when the toilet light was on, you could see the almost perfect view of the person using the toilet.
The view from the window was a yard where the bins were kept and a carpark of an adjacent building. The smell from the bins meant the windows had to stay firmly shut. Probably not a bad thing as the noise from people in this yard using the bins daily, was atrocious.
The floor to ceiling tiled walls of the stairs cases made it sometimes feel you are in a swimming baths rather than a hotel. Not a warm and cozy feeling by any means.
The sad truth of the matter is, you expect a basic level of comfort from a 4 star hotel, even in a standard room. Unfortunately it wasn't to be found at the Ellington. I would even go as far to say we made every effort to stay out all day and only come back to the hotel to go straight to bed and up and out at first light, the room was that un appealing and impossible to relax in.
If you want minimalistic, quirky and just plain (What the Hell) wierd, then this is the place for you.
Sadly the room design made us feel like we were staying in a cheap and nasty hostel, the complete inability to relax and enjoy a lazy day in nice surroundings, almost ruined our holiday.
Aside from this the hotel is good for Bar and outside courtyard drinking, and as said the staff are excellent.
Hard to say, as it's the room design that lets this place down. Avoid the back of the building w...
