“Siegfried”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

While not huge Wagner fans, our group went to see the new production of Siegfried at the Staatsoper. Five and a half hours later, we were all thrilled and surprised at how much we liked it. This is part of The Ring cycle that they are doing together with La Scala in Milan. The singing was outstanding as was the orchestra. The production itself was a combination of modern (video enhancements) and classical (beautiful, fanciful costumes worthy of the story). I bought the tickets on line well in advance and found opera to be less expensive in Berlin than in New York. Highly recommend a visit to the opera (regardless of what they are performing) if you find yourself in Berlin.

“WRONG PICTURE ! The GREAT STATE OPERA is under reconstruction”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

The German National Gem, is now closed for a multi-multi-million Euro reconstruction and is hoped to be back to being one of the worlds greatest Opera houses. Located on the magnificent "Unter-den-Linden" in the East Berlin zone, it was reasonably maintained, though somewhat threadbare, it lacked many of the modern facilities. I went to one of the last performances before it being closed. Its location is the very heart of this great city, few steps from the Great Cathedral, Museum Island and Humbolt University

“Give it a pass until they're back in their own theater.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2012

We attended the Staatsoper performance of La Traviata. Since their home theater is undergoing extensive rennovations, this was billed as "Staatsoper im Schiller Theater. And it sucked. The music was fine, with some above average performances, but they overall experience was tremendously disappointing.

No effort was made to actually build a set. None. There where some bizarre images projected onto the back screen, and chairs brought in and out once in a while. Other than that, a mostly empty stage. Oh, btw, Verdi wrote La Traviate in three acts. Here they did it in one go.

Meh, at best.

“Beautiful opera conducted by Daniel Barenboim”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2012

At this moment the building of the State Opera is being renovated. Performance are therefore scheduled in the Schiller theatre.
We heard a magnificent Simone Boccanegra from Verdi with a radiant Placido Domingo in the leading role. The orchestra sounded great.
