“Hotel Heidelberg” is favorably situated in a calm street of a quarter with plenty of restaurants, predominantly of Italian cuisine. It is only 10 minutes walk away from the public transport hub “Bahnhof Zoo”. The friendly façade of the hotel and the multi-purpose entrance hall serving as reception, bar, TV room and breakfast room gave a positive first impression.
This was tarnished to a certain extent when I entered my room. It was clean and quite spacious, but did not look nicely. The furniture was of a rather cheap kind and partly in bad condition. A maze of cables was lying around on the floor. The cathode ray tube TV (!) was laughably small. Beware of this hotel if you envisage to watch TV in your room! Not even a list of the available TV channels is provided so that one has to find out by oneself. At least, the hotel had respected my wish to be given a room at the backside of the building.
The room was equipped with everything I needed: A little desk (though rickety) with a small, but to my satisfaction very powerful reading light and even a rack for undoing the suitcase. There were net curtains, but no darkening curtains. Instead, interior Venetian blinds were mounted. One of them was somewhat damaged so that the angle of the slats could not be adjusted, which was a little nuisance.
The mattress turned out to be comfortable and the pillow was quite alright. However, sleeping was only possible once the guests of all surrounding rooms had apparently gone to bed as well. Up to then the noise was distressing. Whenever the door of a room was opened or shut that of mine vibrated with a loud noise. Originally there was a further door between the antechamber and the main room, which could have damped the noise, but it had been removed. Furthermore, my shower started dripping loudly probably when others took a shower. This is a pity because the place was so perfectly silent as far as outside noise was concerned: no street noise whatsoever!
Staff was friendly and sympathetic. The buffet breakfast conformed to what one may expect at a three stars hotel: cheese, meat products (though no fish), eggs, various spreads, cereals and home-made fruit salad, but no fresh fruits. However, the deep-frozen and utterly dry bread rolls and alike as well as the insipid brown bread were deceptions. But this bothered me far less than the noise problem.
