We arrived, produced our internet booking and paid. We then proceeded to our double room which was quite spacious (struggling to find something positive to say). It was in terrible condition and the tap on sink didn't work. This wasn't a big deal as I don't think the room was ever advertised as having a basin. However, the sink was half full of brown, stagnant water with things floating in it that had obviously been there some time and wasn't draining.
There were 2 working showers on our floor. Only one seemed to occasionally provide hot water and thus was rarely unoccupied. It was the opposite end of the floor to our room, past reception and we'd normally have to go check if it was free 5 times over an hour or more to stand a chance of getting in there.
The hostel was in a good location for bars & restaurant nearby, there was also a U-bahn station directly outside and a few cafes for breakfast type foods on the doorstep too.
We had booked to go to Berlin for the Love Parade and so paid a premium for accommodation. The love parade was cancelled so prices went down. We had overpaid so asked for a refund, they refused to refund the difference even tho we had reciept and documentation and they agreed they'd overcharged us. We argued, but in hindsight we should of stood our ground and made more of a fuss cos they effectively robbed us.
You could say you get what you pay for, but my advise is shop around. Im returning to Berlin this year (as I love the city) and have found a great deal on a city centre 4* hotel at only twice the price we paid for Hostel Adler. I wouldn't recommend Adler unless your REALLY hard up for cash.
