“Absolutely Fabulous Hotel in Top Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2009

Having been to Berlin a few times, and having experienced Ackselhaus and Prinzlauer Berg area where it is lcoated, I would not contemplate staying anywhere else. Firstly, the area itself is THE place to be, not because it is trendy, relaxed, bohemian, arty, live music streaming most places, alternative, classy, relaxed, organic haven - yes it is all those things, but more so because it has such an amazing ambience. One can spend literally days just in Prinzlauer Berg and surrounds. Get hotel to book you into Pasternak for a dinner or wonder a little furthe afield for fab Japanese at Sasaya's, that is before you hit Cafe de Paris with their fantastic desserts and fresh mint leaf tea etc. If you are after relaxing weekend rather than "snap and move" touristy experience, then this place is a must.

Pre and post booking service was great. We were offered a last minute cancellation on a 2bdr apartment at the same price as the double room(s) we were after that were booked out. We have "Venice" apartment, no photos on web, may not be as sophisticated as Rome or studio deluxe but it is nice enough and is in Ackselhaus. Blue House which is two doors down and in the same building as lovely breakfast location of Cafe del Mar, is also fab and part of the hotel. Fish tanks inserted into the walls, lovely buffet breakfast, with fresh bread for you to pick put in your cane basket and take outside to sit in the sun, blanckets cushions and cane chairs, with great attentive service.

The highlight, particularly on a sunny May long weekend, has to be the lovely gardens that both Ackselhaus and Blue Home offer their guests. It is a tranquil paradise, and the photos on the hotel's website are a true reflection of reality. We bought beautiful fresh produce at Kollwilplatz open air markets on Saturday (a must experience) and had an alfresco long lunch with friends who dropped in to see us. Staff were most attentive to give us extra wine glasses and to ensure we were taken care of. If you are after touristy trip, dont worry, we walked to Alexanderplatz no probs, but you can catch a tram that is 50m from the hotel, 3 stops and you are there. From there you can walk to the Museum Island or Branderburg gate, or catch 100, 200 ot TXL bus wherever you want to go. If you dive, like we did, free parking right in front of the hotel, very convenient.

Great location in Penzlauerberg, only a couple of blocks from the U Bahn station (U2 line, bringing you straight into Stadtmitte and on to Wittenbergerplatz, by the KaDaWe department store). We stayed in the Rome room which was enormous, nicely decorated and very warm. The room shared a small hallway with another room, the bathroom and kitchenette belonging to our room were off this hall (both lockable with the room key). Only the two rooms has access to this small hallway. Breakfast was in the Club del Mar, a couple of doors down, and was lovely - buffet breakfast but with waiter service to make proper coffee etc.

Prenzlauerberg is a good place to stay with lots of bars, cafes (Anita Wronski on Knaakstr was good) and restaurants (Gugelhupf, Due Forni) within walking distance. There was a small organic market on Kollwitzplz on Thursday morning - you have got to try the Bratwurst with the 8 different mustard options and the vegetable waffles (sound terrible but really light and fluffy). The market is bigger on Saturdays, I think.

This was our first visit to Berlin and this hotel made it a memorable one. We stayed in the Blue Home Studio Deluxe and enjoyed our cozy dwelling for 3 nights. The room was clean and stylish, with a great bathroom with stone sink and deep bathtub. There was a decent desk for our laptops and even a towel warming rack. We received a bottle of sparkling water daily and liked the Balinese theme in the room.
The staff was helpful and the Club Del Mar restaurant attached to the hotel served a tasty buffet style breakfast daily with a fireplace in house that added to the atmosphere.
The hotel is located in a nice neighborhood close to a selection of good restaurants and a subway station within a 5 minute walk. We had highspeed internet in the room but not sure about wireless.
We really enjoyed this place and would recomend friends and family to stay here.

For our first visit to Berlin, we chose the hotel Ackslehaus because of its location in Prenzlauer Berg, the SoHo of Berlin as we were told. And we were not disappointed: this is the place where Berlin proves to be to Germany what New York is to the USA – Berlin is not Germany, it’s a universe of its own. Rather than a hotel, the Ackselhaus is a perfectly renovated house of the end of the 19th century converted into an appartment building, conveniently located at 10’ walk from the subway Senefelder Platz. Unfortunately, there is no elevator, which meant for us 5 floors to climb – with luggage, and without assistance, as service is reduced to a quite fromal reception and check in. The room is large, with a small kitchen and a refrigerator, a luxury to which we would have preferred a more thorough cleaning: even after complaining about hair on the bathroom floor, no improvement occurred. Breakfast is perfect and plenty, in the Club del Mar located just 20m away from the Ackselhaus in the sister house “blue home”, which is more expensive as a hotel, but cosier and equipped with an elevator. Do not hesitate to have some typical Berlin food at the restaurant located just next to the blue home, which, for some obscur reasons, the receptionist was not willing to recommend nor even to comment to us. Another point is that they do not accept credit cards – hard to imagine, and I hope they will adpat to the real world soon. In short, Ackselhaus is nice, a bit chilly, and slightly overpriced considering the exceptional offers in other parts of Berlin. If you want to stay at Prenzlauer Berg, which we can strongly recommend, invest even a little more and stay at the blue home.

I found this little gem (Blue Home) in the Lonely Planet guide and I must say I was not dissapointed. I booked via a phone call from Australia and the staff were extremely friendly. Made my booking not knowing what to expect when i arrived for my first visit to Berlin. When I arrived it was afternoon and I was tired from over 35+ hours of travelling on planes, trains & taxi's. The staff recommended a short walk of the area. Nothing was a problem for the relaxed and friendly staff, it felt like you were part of their home. Prenzlauerberg was a really lovely place and the Blue Home was such a cool place to come back to at the end of a long day sightseeing Berlin. Close to some great cafe/resturant streets, Great litle pub downstairs for that late afternoon beer. It was wonderful to walk around the quite streets in the twighlight. Beautifully furnished apartment and great value for money, I would recommend the Blue home to any business or holiday traveller. Close to the U-Bahn, and easy to find, great if you just want to chill fo a few days. I'll be certainly coming back to Berlin, Prenzlauer & Ackselhaus/Blue Home.

I stayed in the hotel's Blue Home, with my 2 teenage daughters, and we really loved its relaxed, comfortable feel. We had a mini-apartment with a fully-functioning contemporary small kitchen (the eating out is so good in Berlin though that we didn't make the best use of it!) The breakfast is fabulous, and hearty enough to get you through till teatime, the rooms were comfy and spacious, (I slept on an extremely comfortable sofa-bed, and the girls had the stylish bedroom) we had a balcony and the garden is gorgeous. The hotel kindly and efficiently organised bikes for us to explore the (cyclist-friendly! woo hoo!) city (if only to let us confirm that PrenzlauerBerg is absolutely the most appealing corner of this amazing chilled-out friendly city - the hotel is excellently located in the heart of it in a lovely quiet tree-lined street, near everything, buzzy but relaxed, too.) The reception staff were amazingly helpful and friendly, and we were all very impressed all round. Highly recommended. (Even in the rain we loved the place, can't wait to return in the sunshine!). The only drawback was the rather tedious and ubiquitous muzak, which was a bit irritating. (Hotel, a small NB- we don't all love Celine Dion! Peace and quiet is infinitely preferable and it would have been nice to have this option) But I would definitely go back there, despite this quibble.

  • Liked — The comfortable accommodation stylish garden and friendly staff
  • Disliked — The all-pervasive muzak!

My husband and I stayed for two nights, we were delighted to be in the Honeymoon Suite. It is a fifth floor walk-up (no problem since we live on the fourth floor at home), but might be a challenge for those with a ton of luggage. The room consisted of a beautiful sitting room with a huge window, a comfy bedroom with more windows, and a large kitchen. Although we didn't get to cook, we did make use of the electric kettle. It was very relaxing and on a rainy day, hard to leave. There are several gardens and courtyards to extend the cozy feeling. The staff was very courteous, but the breakfast, while good, was a bit expensive at 15 Euros each, there are plenty of other options in this amazing neighborhood. I will definitely return and recommend it to others.
