We stayed at St Christopher's at the end of Sept as I was doing the Berlin marathon. Despite looking for accommodation in May, practically every hotel was booked up, so I was relieved to find this place with such good reviews on Tripadvisor. I looked up their website and it looked like a great value place to stay, and more importantly, it was available!
Not being students, we were a little worried about staying in a hostel but we needn't have worried. The place is very clean and even though there's a fairly noisy bar on the ground floor, as soon as you walk upstairs you can't hear anything at all. It was actually fun meeting travellers in the bar, and if you're into watching sports and drinking, it seems ideal! The breakfasts (which are included in the very low price) are pretty basic and you help yourself - there's toast (DIY), eggs, cereals, fruit, salami, cheese - all quite basic quality but fine and it saves having to sort it out yourself. There's free wifi if you have your own laptop or there are PCs you can pay to go on. Lots of lounging space but we had our own apartment so didn't need it.
The only niggle I had was that they initially put us in 'Apartment' 2 - this is not an apartment at all, but a double room with ensuite bathroom. On the website it says that all apartments have a couch/lounging area and kitchen and this is what I was looking for as I was running the marathon and needed an area to relax, and also to prepare breakfast on the day. We talked this through with the staff and to their credit they managed to sort it all out for us, so the rest of our stay (4 nights after the initial night in apt 2) we were in Apartment 6, which was about a million times better. This was a large room, furnished to IKEA standards, with a kitchenette, bathroom, sofa/lounging area, etc. It's not the Ritz but we liked it. It had a balcony which was nice. (Strangely it sounds like the one the other lady describes as Apartment 2 in her review - so who knows?) I really felt awful about complaining but it was definitely not what it said on the website (wrt facilities in Apt 2) and once we got moved it was definitely worth it.
The hostel is right across the street from a subway so it's a great base, and Alexanderplatz (a main station) is a short walk away. We would recommend the free walking tours - they pick up in the hostel bar after breakfast around 10. You don't have to pay at all if you don't want to but we found the tour really good and obviously most people donate something. Also round the corner is a Vietnamese restaurant called (cheesily!) Good Morning Vietnam. We found it by accident but it's absolutely brilliant. We went there about 3 times. It's obscenely cheap but not low rent at all - amazing food, about 2 euros for a starter and 6 for a main, and lovely inside. Top tip!
Would recommend St Christophers to most people (maybe not old people as it is mainly full of young people), as I think it's really good value. We both thought it was very clean and surprisingly quiet given there's so much going on downstairs. I can imagine it's absolute heaven if you're a student/backpacker. If you're going for the apartment (which I'd recommend), ask for apartment 6 with the balcony!
