“Clean but bathroom too small.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

I stayed here with three friends. We each got one free drink in the bar when we arrived. We had our own room. The room was clean but the bathroom was very small, especially the shower. There were two beds and bunk beds. One of the beds was broken. Staff seemed friendly enough. It was not far from the trams.

We checked into our tiny room with a sink and a tiny locker. There was no air conditioning, and being the top floor, it was hot.

The bathrooms were like a school toilet block and the walls were paper thin. Not the best location, however was a good price.
I will definately find somewhere closer next time.

Situated at the Landsberger Allee Generator Hostel is primarily a hostel for very young people. The rooms are spartan with inferior materials. The bunk beds in the dormitories are wobbly, the showers and toilets ok, but not outstanding. Unfortunately in the rooms there was only neon lights and no reading lamps, so that one is awakened at the different arrivals of roommates by the light again and again. A comfortable sleeping through was therefore often not possible.

I think the staff thought they were doing me a favour by giving me an "upgrade" from and 8 bed to a 6 bed, that had no one else in it. but when your traveling by yourself, I'm more the happy to be in an 8 bed dorm with people in it, because it makes it a lot easier to meet people! the hostel is way too big and too clinical. its obviously aimed at big traveling groups such as schools and sports teams. there was no atmosphere and not a lot of room to just chill and meet others. plus every time you get off the internet, you have to re enter a log in and password when you want to get back on. pain in the a**. on top of this the location is not awesome. lets just say i booked 4 nights and after 1 i started looking of other hostels.

Generator was 1st place to stay en route to Colditz Castle, travelling in group with age range from 45 to 74. Generator is on Landersberger Allee (S Bahn line station) Accomodation clean and safe. Free WiFi does not reach upper accommodation floors but is fast downstairs. This is my 3rd stayand this time we had to buy a towel - not supplied - for 6 euro. But you get a super souvenir with Generator name on it as a travelling towel. Can be busy and noisy in bar area but sleeping corridors very quiet. Very helpful staff. Breakfast has a token system. Before 0900 breakfast area is busy so we went out of hostel and round the corner to walkway with silver pillars and the small cafe there. Had a quiet coffee and bought nice rolls for the day before returning to hostel and a decent breakfast. The Mexican restaurant next to the cafe was reasonable and food was good. Both of these places face the tram stop in the middle of the road as you face it you need the tram going to your right to get to town. We got a tourist pass for S Bahn / U Bahn at airport station for 25 euro for 72 hours, there are 2 types of ticket machine one for normal trains one for S and U Bahn - choose the correct one! From here it was onwards to Leipzig having booked ICE train via Deutsches Bahn website 91 days before journey. This web site will give you connections from Berlin to Colditz by way of ICE train to Leipzig - a local train - and then two buses (there is no direct rail link). This return transport arrangement cost £35 per traveller, you get on line printable ticket for all travellers on one form make sure the perons who booked has the credit card / passport to show to the conductor on the train. But at Leipzig Main Station there is bus 690 which goes direct to Colditz takes 1 1/2 hours and costs 6 euro sixty cents per journey. See you at Colditz Castle review

This is one of the best hostels in Europe I have been to on vacation. The front desk was prompt and courteous with information about how to ride the metro system. The rooms were clean and bathrooms were very clean. We stayed in a ensuite private room, and there was a beautiful view of the city. The bar and restaurant downstairs was amazing, very inexpensive. Just a few Euros to eat and drink and they had daily specials. My only issue was it was a bit away from the sites we wanted to see but with 24hr metro transportation it was perfectly fine.

Room Tip: The higher the room the better the view, of course. The bar is slow sometimes but, a great starting...

The first thing that one has to say about this hostel is that it is really inexpensive. It's just 10 Euros to stay in a regular dorm which is really cheap considering that Berlin is such an attractive city. In addition, I have to highlight the friendliness of the staff. Everyone is really nice and happy to give directions and such.

The rooms in the hostel are kind of plain but if you just want to sleep there and not hang out (no WiFi, no bed lights) it's fine. Probably the greatest flaw about the hostel, however, is its size. This leads to two things:

1. Anonymity
2. Large groups of travellers, in particular, school classes

It's just not a very familiar feeling you have in this hostel and you'll probably never feel super-comfortable there. Furthermore, a lot of the guests are part of large groups, in particular, school classes. Hence, it's not the typical hostel crowd of backpackers you'd expect and it can be hard to socialize with people in your own age group, well, except if you're 16 years old maybe. This fact is particularly disadvantageous if you're travelling alone and therefore would be happy about getting to know some fellow travellers.
