“A whole day's trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2013

This museum is huge. We were there for about 7 hours, and still didn't see everything. There's a great outdoor area with windmills and a water tower, with a picnic area, so taking your own food makes the day cheaper! There's so much to see, trains, photography exhibits, jewellery making, television, radio, computers, shipping and aeroplanes and so much more. Well worth the entry fee (and we had a Welcome Berlin book which allowed us a discount).

“Transport thro the Ages”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

For me the highlight of this visit was to see the wonderful steam engines on display. When you stand along side you appreciate how big they really are in comparison to UK steam engines. Although track is same the size, European loading guage is much bigger. Also full of aircraft and other wonderful transport.

“Great content - almost no English descriptions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

This huge museum is located somewhat away from the center. The entrance fee was 6 Euros. I was so disappointed that there were so few signs in English throughout this huge museum. Because I am an avid train fan, that was my favorite section and where I spent most of my time. Many train engines and cars were housed in original round houses belonging to the former Anhalter rail station. . The individual plaques describing each engine or car were in German only. Posted throughout the exhibit were general narratives about the history of trains in Germany in various time periods and these were in both German and English. It was a very impressive exhibit and I enjoyed it. The ship and air/flight exhibits were in an adjoining 5-story modern building. Except for a very few signs in the flight section, all of the signs were in German only. Very frustrating. An interesting aspect of the flight exhibit was a section devoted to the German airmen of World War II, which also included some actual destroyed planes shot down by the Allies. There were a few other exhibits concerning various occupations such as artificial flowers, jewelry-making, suitcase manufacturing and photography, which I checked out only briefly because of the time involved. This museum would take an entire day or more to visit if you covered all the sections. I took a break during my visit by having a very inexpensive but good pork stew meal in the restaurant on the premises. This is a very good museum but non-German speakers will inevitably be very frustrated at the lack of English translations.

“Great place for grown-ups!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2012

We spotted this place - couldn't miss it - when on a boat tour, and saw the airlift plane hanging outside. Really interesting exhibits in a huge area. Planes, trains and computing were my particular highlights - including an original Enigma machine and a replica of the Zuse Z1 computer. The only slight negatives were lack of signs to help find our way around, and very little English information on exhibits. But definitely worth a visit.
