“Good value for money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

A quite ordinary 3 star hotel with great location close to Potsdamer Platz. Well kept hotel and friendly staff. Nice complimentary breakfast buffet.

Clean and quiet rooms (opt for one overlooking the court since the street outside is busy).

ok one good thing they have ice water in the lobby for free and they have free wifi.
from this point downhill.
room yukky noisy small no bath only shower.
the size is for bed night stand and a chair! i swear.
the outfit of the front desk girls are a joke 1900 amish country style.
the food was sheer awful. the location is near all the call girls.
please avoid.
no elvetor to the room use your legs then you can have a tiny elvator going to your floor.
i will say try the center area. its more but its so much better.
sorry. will not come back.

Dear Navawritz

Thank you for your feedback.

The Hotel Altberlin is primarily a hotel for people who like to enjoy Berlin as it was at the beginning of the 20 th century but don´t want to do that without modern comfort. It is not a design hotel like you find everywhere but individual and charming. We do understand that typical stile and food of Berlin is not for everyone.
We are proud that our theme “oldberlin” is guaranteed in every little detail in our house.

We feel sorry that you missed a bathtub. Some of our rooms have a bathtub please ask for it.
Berlin is a metropolis in that way there are some points in the city where you can find people working in red light milieu but not in our neighborhood. Next to us you find the variety Wintergarten , the Berlin Kulturforum, the Potsdamer Platz and a lot of other interesting points you can reach by foot.

As for the elevator, please accept our apologies. We had to build this in that way because our house was constructed in year 1874 and so there was no other way to handle that, but we wanted to offer our guests that service.

Kind Regards

Your Hotel Altberlin Team

We stayed at the Altberlin for two nights from the 30th June

We have been to Berlin a few time now and usually stay at the Delta just down the road but this time they were fully booked so we chose the AltBerlin. We based our choice on price and location not realising that it was a Tripadvisor award winner.

The hotel has a Fin de Siecle style and the staff are dressed in the appropriate style. There are a number of comments on here about staff rudeness but I can honestly say we never encountered any problems with this. From my experience most Germans are polite and reserved but that shouldn't be construed as rudeness, if you want a hug go to Disneyland.

You enter the hotel through a side passageway that leads into an inner courtyard; reception is on the left in a room filled with period furniture. This leads through to the bar and breakfast room/restaurant.

The room was smallish but comfortable and spotlessly clean as was the bathroom. The shower took a while to get there but we found the best tactic was to just keep increasing the cold water as the temperature increased.

Breakfast was excellent and plentiful. You can eat al fresco in the courtyard but you need to be out of bed earlier than I can manage.

There was no airconditioning in the room but that's about par for the course for older German hotels, unfortunately as Berlin had its worst thunderstorm for many years it was a bit uncomfortable On Saturday but the other night was fine.

Our room overlooked the courtyard which can be a bit noisy once they start preparing breakfast if you have the windows open; that said, the bacon smelt delicious.

Location-wise you are a short walk or shorter busride from Potsdammer Platz; the M48 departs from outside the hotel and runs regularly up to Alexander Platz for a couple of euros. Alternately, Kurfürstenstrasse U-bahn is just down the road in the opposite direction.

In summary, the Altaberlin will be our first choice if we go back to Berlin for Christmas

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms seem to be quieter than facing the street, I suspect the higher floors are quiter...

Don 't be put off by the entrance to the hotel, the previous review mentions leaves in the entrance etc - yes it's true but hard to describe...here goes, you walk into the front door an it's really like an indoor walkway but once you enter the actual reception then it's really lovely, very old berlin and charming. Fantastic meal in resturant at night and the same room is used for a equally fabulous breakfast. Although the bedroom was clean and well furnished and the bathroom modern and spotless, the corridoors need a complete overall as they are woodchip painted in bright orange! A mix of a hotel as the rooms, reception and resturant is great and the staff were really helpful, but to make it a total experience they need to address the walkway and corridoors!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the small courtyard as they are quiet.

We have stayed in many hotels in Germany but this has got to be the worst. Stayed here in November 2011 for the Christmas markets, wondered what we had walked into as soon as we stepped through front door. Leaves everywhere not been cleaned. When we got to our room there were no headboards on the bed no draws to put underware in. There was a wardrobe with only two coat hangers and no shelves so still nowhere to put underclothes, but the bathroom was modern and emaculate. When went to ask if we could change rooms we were told that there was not any other rooms to go into yet the cleaner showed us three empty rooms which he knew was not taken. Reception staff were so rude and unaccomodating. After five minutes they admitted there were other rooms and we took that yet that was dirty considering it was supposedly cleaned. Stayed for one night and then found ourselves a lovely hotel for the rest of our stay. We couldnt get out of there fast enough.

Room Tip: Be aware they do not cater for disabled people. Although we got our money back would not recommend...

Lovely antique feel to this hotel, very quaint and oldworld style. Did not eat in the restaurant so can not comment on the food but the breakfast is substancial.
Unfortunately the weather was poor so we could not avail of the lovely little courtyard which would have been so nice to enjoy a beer in.
The room we had was very spacious with high ceilings, only downside was it was at the front of the house and with a main road outside and the buses starting at 5am it was difficult to get a great nights sleep, but then again we did'nt go to Berlin to sleep!

Room Tip: away from the front of house

I did a lot of research to find a nice 3 star hotel at a 2 star price. I found this in Hotel Altberlin and booked through entertainment.com for a great price ($86/night for a single) and a rebate after my stay. The hotel oozes charm and coziness. Wonderful, cozy restaurant where I had dinner one night and breakfast every morning. Wonderful selection for breakfast. Large portions at dinner. There aren't any other restaurants that I could find near the hotel and it's about 15 min walk to Potsdamer Platz. Single room was a nice size; pretty furniture, big modern marble-like tiles in bathroom. Although it's an old house, they had added an elevator. Friendly staff, free internet use on their computer, many newspapers, lounge area with fluffy chairs and sofas. Stayed 4 nights.

Room Tip: My room faced the beautiful courtyard. This was extra special about my room. It was quite, I could s...
