If (like us) you are in Berlin for the night life, galleries, graffiti ridden streets, underground bars and warehouse parties, but feel guilty about not experiencing the amazing sites of touristy West Berlin, then this tour is perfect as it covers most of them in just two hours.
We wanted a quick overview of the main events, sites and some architectural facts, interjected with some local knowledge and witty anecdotes...and we had to look no further than Mr Sam Noble, a fellow Englishman, and terrific tour guide. The Berlin Free Tours start at 11am outside the Starbucks at the Brandenburg gate. The group was a good size (around 20), and Sam was great at keeping everyone together, and finding sheltered spots for us to stand (it was a bit of a miserable rainy Berlin day) and listen to his wonderfully historically accurate and engaging accounts of Berlin's past. We stopped for a coffee/ food/ toilet break half way through, which made the two hour long tour seem very manageable indeed. Sam put 100% of himself into the tour, answering any questions, and engaging in conversation with all members of the tour group, a very confident and intelligent young man!
The tours run on a volunteer basis, but the guides make their money from donations. Sam told us he was studying for his PhD, so I assumed it would be rude to pay him any less than the going rate for a 2hr walking city tour (around 12euro per person), considering this was funding his studies. However Sam really gave it his all, we learnt so much, and were constantly engaged with what we has saying, so we decided to tip a bit more.
I highly recommend this tour to ANYONE who wants to find out a bit more about the history of Berlin, and have some quality entertainment at the same time.
