“Unpretentious”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

Very good standard, unpretentious, excellent breakfast, pillows from which to choose, close to shopping, has a pool. However, the lobby often stinks from a nearby smokers-room (adjacent to a cigar shop?) - this inhibited me from socializing in the lobby and I don't think it has a place in a hotel in this day and age. Internet free, but required repeated logging in.

This hotel is OK, there is nothing really wrong with it, but... rooms have some stains on the walls and are overall not great, I requested a room with two beds and got a room with one, the service wasn't horrible but it wasn't pleasant either, the location is not amazing.... and the price is pretty high. So I guess I just didn't feel this hotel delivered sufficient value.

If you don't mind bed bugs, the hotel is fine. After the first night of a four night stay, i awoke to extreme itchiness and bites all over my body. The staff immediately moved me to another room directly next door, where the problem did not go away.

They had all my clothes dry cleaned and provided me access to the lounge, but refused to compensate me any further for replacement luggage and briefcase which I would need to replace on my arrival back home.

My colleague also encountered the same problem. He even caught a few of the bugs and showed them to the hotel manager.

Hotel management refused to acknowledge that there were bed bugs. Said they had a company come in to inspect but would not show the paperwork proving this. Lousy customer service management skills. They made it out like i was the cause rather than the victim. Asked me where I had been traveling from...where I replied "nowhere, from home".

Dear “Michel B”,

Thank you for being our guest. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your disappointment. We want to personally apologize and we are sorry that you did not feel comfortable during your stay at our hotel. A clean room that has been prepared for our guests is basic for a good stay.

We take every precaution in order to prevent bed bugs and all other pests. Our hotel has a daily, weekly and monthly pest program in place in order to control, prevent and eliminate any possible infestation. The pest control company is certified and uses a bed bugs detection dog (similar to the ones customs uses for narcotics). It is our priority to ensure each room meets the high quality standards Steigenberger guests expect and deserve.

Nevertheless, we would like to point out we see things a little differently.

Our contracted pest control provider was on site within two hours after reception had been informed. The pest control company did a thorough and documented inspection of the room. Even the detection dog neither found evidence of any stage of bed bugs nor any other infestation. A copy of the report has been passed on to tripadvisor. We are not sure what insects might have caused eventual problems but they were not bed bugs.

It is extremely important for us to count with our valuable guests with any feedback, comment or even a complaint. But it is not compliant with our binding code of conduct to accept a significant claim for indemnification that comes along with a threat of a post at tripadvisor.

The well-being of our guests has the highest priority and we always strive for a fair solution. At this point I would like to ask you to please contact me directly at the hotel so we can properly address this situation with a resolution to your satisfaction.

With kind regards
STEIGENBERGER HOTEL BERLIN

Each morning we have been awakened by emergency vehicles around 8 am... But could not understand why. Otherwise well located hotel just away from Ku'damm and with affordable price if you book in advance at special rate directly on the hotel's site. Big room quite comfortable. Poor WiFi signal in the rooms, especially at night when everyone connects.

We stayed at the Steigenberger a year ago and found it good enough to return this year. The room, the outlook, the position, the parking and the ambiance were all excellent. On arrival we were greeted at the desk by an officious "manager" who berated me for not having the correct voucher (having booked on the internet) and generally treated me like a recalcitrant small child - only to discover that we did have the correct piece of paper. This involved an altercation and unnecessary raising of blood pressure and not what one expects from the customer service of a 5* hotel. The restaurant catered for our special dietary needs very well, even if the maitre d' lacked something in charm and interpersonal skills. They did give us access to the executive suite for breakfast which was appreciated. All in all we would return there, but would advise the hotel to look to its staff training and staff morale to ensure customers are treated courteously at all times.

Dear "David C",

Thank you very much for being our guest for another time and for being so honest to us.

You are right. There is no apologizing for unfriendly staff. We already terminated trainings for our reception and service staff and want to say sorry.

We hope we can welcome you again soon and convince you of our silver linings.
With kind regards

The hotel is located next to the Kudamm so it's perfect for shops and restaurants and very well connected by public transportation (several metro stops around). I was upgraded to a suite and was impressed with the room. It was very spacious, clean, nicely decorated, and with little details such as fresh flowers that really made a difference. The staff was friendly and helpful. The internet connection was not great, sometimes it didn't work and having to re-enter long codes every time to connect was a bit annoying. I had access to the Lounge and it was well worth it. The food was awesome, especially breakfast, and the ladies there were very nice. The only negative was that the king-size bed was actually two twin beds pushed together with two twin comforters so that was a bit odd. Other than that it was a great hotel and I would not hesitate to stay there again.

Arrived on the 4th sept to 11th sept. the first morning the shower was going hot cold, mentioned about it at reception and it was fixed by the morning. Nice piano bar where they had a singer Thursday night to Saturday night. Stayed in the executive room where I could have a coffee with the nespresso machine included in the price of the room. Staff very friendly and helpful. There is a smoking room in the hotel next to restaurant so you don't need to stand outside. You get a username and password when you check in for the free wi-fi, worked perfectly had no problems. During my stay I managed to finish of there German whiskey slyrs. Would go back to this hotel next time I'm in Berlin.
