The lobby areas and the restaurant are charming and feel like the something deserving of the Savoy name. Breakfast is so good that our friends who were not staying in the hotel decided to join us for breakfast and pay for it - and there was champagne included!
Our first room was a little tired and small and a bit disappointing and when i mentioned this in the morning they immediately ofered a different room and moved our belongings while we were out sightseeing during the day. The new room, however, did not have a bath and was not much bigger. So they moved us again and 3rd time lucky, we got a fantastic room with a great bed and a bath. The half bottle of wine which greeted us turned out not to be free but rather expensive - be careful! So be aware that the room might not be as good as the pictures on the internet - i guess you mihgt not have the luxury of being able to change rooms (twice) if the hotel is full. But even if we had been stuck with the slightly tired room i would still have enjoyed our stay there. A hotel room without a bath in the bathroom would not have worked for me, though, so it might be worth specifying a bath if that is important to you.

Room Tip: There is a roof terrace on the top floor, but the rooms there were a little tired.

Booked this hotel after watching Richard E Grant's 'Hotel Secrets' and what as absolute gem. Go before something changes to this little piece of history, as it is something else. We had a very quiet, air conditioned suite (room 311) which is located directly above the Gabor suite. It was fantastic, as Gabors but with rich wood as appose to her light, white suite. Very comfortable.
Now the smoke; the one thing that almost prevented me from coming! Upon entering one evening there was a slight smell in the air, in reception, AND THAT WAS IT!!!! Five evenings....one quick sniff in the air and so I assume it's related to which room you have, and if doors/windows are open in rooms drawing it in. Or maybe it was a guest smoking on the balcony as we encountered late one night!! So, if this is putting you off, get a room at the back...request a non-smoking room, and they will endeavour to sort this out. I am a non-smoker that absolutely loathes the smell, and I pick it up instantly. To think I nearly didn't book this hotel due to this, what a travesty that would have been. Go.....enjoy; it's absolutely beautiful. You literally feel like you're IN the 1920's!! I didn't want to leave. Thank you to all the staff both in reception and at breakfast. One final point to guests: please keep your voices down whilst walking down the corridors late at night, and not bang your door: they shut really easily if you just take your time!

Hotel Savoy, located near the zoo stop on the subway and the new C/O Berlin is a delight. Red velvet decor, lots of wood paneling and a top drawer restaurant (go for the room with breakfast, the breakfasts are great and there is not much around there in the morning. The lunches were great also. My room was small - I was alone - but the bathroom was new and there was a desk and great internet service. Concierge was accommodating and everyone spoke english.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the garden. The rooms in the front, no matter what floor, are above the cigar...

we were a group of 6 friends,so had 3 different rooms. The ones on 3rd and 5 th ok with renovated bathrooms, clean and relatively spacious. Unfortunatley the room on the 1st floor was cramped, smelt of smoke and had a very old fashioned bathroom. After having seen our room my friends thought they might have been put in the staff quarters ! The ratings I have given are based on my room on the 3rd floor. it is a good non corporate style hotel but limited extra facilities or real character,
There is a cigar bar accessed from the lobby so the hotel has a pervasive smell of cigar smoke most of the time. especially in the evenings. This did rise up the lifts and on to the corridors but not into the rooms on the 3rd or above. it is a shame it is a cigar bar because if you dont smoke you really dont want to use it and there is no other bar in the hotel.. The restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere we only had afternoon tea in it which was fine, good service. but there are plently of other good restaurants and bars nearby, try the Kempinski Hotel. Cafe Brel, Dicke Wirten all nearby. The main attractions of Berlin other than the Zoo and Charlotten Schloss are NOT near this hotel theyare a U/S Train or cab ride away , but Berlin transportation very efficient and selection of stations near the hotel. ( you will hear trains almost anywhere in Berlin)
This hotel is close to very good shopping and interesting night clubs. try the Puro lounge in the Europa Centre whoever you are you will not be out of place. This hotel is a good functional hotel for a City Break in Berlin; The real downside is no onsite bar other than the smokey cigar bar. which is fine if you smoke . Not sure how the smoking rooms fit with EU regulations either ? the Wifi is free but tricky to get on,

Room Tip: do not have a room on the first floor, they do smell of smoke and some have ashtrays so smoking rooms...

Wanting to avoid a large 'corporate' hotel we chose the Savoy based on its location and many reviews.
Positives:
- The location is great, close to the main station, Ku'damm for shopping, the Zoo, Tiergarten, Kaiser Willhelm, bars and restaurants. Getting to the main tourist attractions was easy by foot, public transport or taxi. (Front desk very happy to organise).
- An art deco hotel full of charcter. We had a light tea one afternoon in the welcoming dining room and the service was fast, polite and efficient.
- 5th floor twin bedroom was spacious, clean and recently modernised hence a large, white bathroom with bath and double shower.
Negatives:
- The only bar is the cigar bar which stinks all day and there is nowhere else in the winter to relax and have a drink. Whilst this isn't a huge problem, as there are other bars locally (try the Berlin bar in the Kempinkski Hotel just down the road), it is somewhat surprising.
- The first floor bedrooms have not been refurbished and are definitely sub-standard.
- Reception staff whilst helpful could try smiling.
Recommendations:
- Ask for a refurbished room on floors 3 - 6, overlooking the courtyard if road noise bothers you.
- Don't stay there if the smell of cigar smoke is going to bother you.

Our experience was colored by the fact that in room wifi was unavailable for most of our week-long stay. Desk was not particularly helpful or empathetic. This was a business trip, and I was eager to send documents by email.
Room was small and cramped. The lingering smell of the cigar lounge downstairs on the premises was not pleasant either.
On the plus side the dining room is beautiful, and the breakfast was abundant in its choices and tasty. We are dinner there (one night and quite expensive), but it was elegantly and graciously served and absolutely scrumptious.

Room Tip: Request room other side of building from cigar lounge and as high as you can get to avoid cigar loun...

Dear onearleft,

thank you very much for taking the time to review our property.

We are really happy to hear, that you enjoyed our rich and varied breakfast buffet as well as the dinner at our beautiful Weinrot Restaurant. Furnished in powerful red with original lighting from the thirties and opulent stucco applications it really does create a warm and nostalgic atmosphere. Of course we have forwarded your comment to our chef, the kitchen and the restaurant team.

We are really sorry for the inconvenience due to the unavailable wifi during your stay. We fully agree that this is not acceptable. Unfortunately our provider experienced some severe problems at that time. It took them several days to fix the local outage in our area, but in the meantime all problems are solved.

We regret to hear that you were not entirely satisfied with our front desk staff and we can assure you that this does not reflect our usual service standards. Our goal is to deliver high quality hospitality to every guest on every stay! All our employees are dedicated and always provide an excellent and personalized service. Of course we have analyzed and discussed your comment with the entire team.

It’s right, that the famous cigar lounge, Times Bar, is directly adjacent to our hotel lobby. We try to keep the door to the bar always closed and there is also a strong ventilation system and three air intake filters installed at the Times Bar to minimize the odour. But unfortunately sometimes the smoke gets out to our lobby and our main stair case. We are sorry for any inconvenience!

Thank you for staying with us. We sincerely hope, that you will give us another chance to prove you that our four star superior hotel is an excellent choice for a stay in Berlin, no matter if it`s a business or a leisure trip.

Kind regards,
Your Savoy Hotel Berlin
