“Old style, but not amazing.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

I use to be at Savoy every year for business and there are good and less good aspects about this hotel:
Good:
1) the location, 5 minutes from the Zoologischer Garten station.
2) cleanliness, nothing to say about that
3) the breakfast, probably the best thing offered by the hotel: various, rich and quality.
4) bathroom: modern and clean, depending on which room you are, you may have shower or bath tub.

Bad:
1) the rooms, strange to say, are too bright and its difficult to sleep because of the noise (I suggest to pick a room on the corner away from the main street to sleep properly) and because beds are not very comfortable.
2) the smell of cigar in the all lobby... really stinks!
3) the rooms are too hot: winter or summer, heater switched on or off, is definitely too hot.

Staff always polite and professional. Recommended for the location, the old fashion style, the amazing breakfast and for the famous cigar shop, if you are a smoker of course!

Room Tip: Pick a corner room, away from the main road.

Perhaps it was the time of the year (October), but I found this to be one of the best bargains I have ever gotten. We had a large room at a ridiculously low price. You just cannot beat the location, a relatively quiet side street near the most bustling street in Berlin. My only complaint is that it's adjacent to a smoking lounge and you'll breathe some of that air as you pass the hotel going, but that's minor.

I can recommend this hotel in every respect! We were even upgraded in the category of a suite, the Greta Garbo Suite, which was beautiful. The only little deficit was that the the desk manager was not well informed about the breakfast times on New Year's day so that we hurried unnecessarily. Breakfast was served till one o'clock, not only till 12 as he told us.

The Savoy is a classic. The rooms are older and you will know this the moment you step in. However, the bathrooms are modern and very clean. The staff is very knowledgeable and willing to help. The handsome manager was very welcoming and the young men at the front desk advised us on many locations. There was one lady that was quite curt, but we live in Germany so we have gotten used to some of the cultural differences.
We stayed for six nights and decided one day to stay in. We stepped out for lunch and when we got back our room had been cleaned!
My husband enjoyed the cigar lounge with its classic style and history. We also enjoyed celebrating the New Year there as well. We had a nonsmoking room on the fourth floor and NEVER smelled smoke. My son is asthmatic so we would of moved hotels if such was the case. Initially we stayed in East Berlin at the beginning of our holiday and was in walking distance to everything. Staying in West Berlin at the Savoy was a GREAT decision. We saw it all!

Really mixed opinions. I liked some stuff but really disliked some aspects of the hotel.

Good stuff:
1) Breakfast spread was wow! Cheese and cold cuts had loads of variety. Extremely pleased with the selection.
2) Travelling across Europe, making comparisons across the various hotels and given the price we paid, I must say the price to size ratio was great. The superior rooms given were huge! Coud probably fit a family of four with 2 extra beds easily.
3) Comfortable beds and pillows. Loads of wardrobe space.
4) The room's interior provides quite a classy and 90s nostalgic feel.

Bad stuff:
1) The cigar smell is simply overpowering. I do not recommend this place for infants or children or those with sensitive noses. True enough, the hotel is famous for the Cigar Bar but if I'm still greeted by cigar smoke on a non-smoking floor, I will conclude that something is seriously wrong with the hotel's ventilation. A non-smoking floor must remain smoke free!
2) I stayed here during winter. What was absolutely strange was the fact that with the heaters off, the room was way too stuffy and hot! I had to open the windows to let in the cold winter air just to sleep comfortably.
3) I didn't really feel welcome at the reception desk. Come on guys, a smile wouldn't hurt at all.

Feeling ambivalent for this hotel stay. Do give some thoughts about this place if you are considering a stay here... or if you are a cigar-lover...

Old hotel in good location close to the Zoologishe Garten. The reception area is very old but it still looks good. Some refurbishment could be done.

I got an old room that was worn out. Old windows with non existent soundproofing, so you heard everything from the street below (including the S-bahn). The bed is uncomfortable and the pillow is pretty bad as well.

Excellent breakfast and the cigarr bar next door is worth a visit.

We stayed at the Savoy hotel for a short shopping trip in Berlin. The hotel has a great location as you are right in the shopping district and is well accessible to S-Bahn and U-Bahn so even going over to Mitte is very fast. I would call Savoy a very "traditional" hotel so if you looking for a design, trendy, modern accommodation, then this is not your pick. The hotel was clean, though rooms are a little outdated and service was not really friendly. The hotel is famous for the Cigar bar which perhaps works for the clientele of the hotel, but personally I did not like the cigar smell every time I walked into a hotel.

Room Tip: Very traditional and perhaps a little bit outdated rooms
