We are staying at Hilton Luxembourg (another story) and planned a 3-day visit to Berlin while in the area, only checking-out this morning! We were lucky enough to choose the weekend commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Federation of the Republic of Germany (23/24 May) and enjoyed the festive atmosphere. We were upgraded through HHonors to a corner junior suiite - 4096 - which offered close-up views of the beautiful French and German cathedrals in Gendarmenmarkt. The suite was approx. 8m x 7m and comprised an entrance hall, a lovely sitting room with three floor-to-ceiling windows, a sofa and 2 armchairs, a huge LCD tv and a business desk etc. An opulent double-handbasin, black granite with white tiled bathroom provided all the amenities and a nicely-proportioned bedroom with another LCD tv with lots of wardrobe space and drawers. The executive lounge was on the 6th floor and was very pleasant with some comfortable sofas and plenty of small tables and chairs set in groups of 2 or 3.There is a help-yourself system to the drinks, which was very generous and the food was plentiful and varied. The only downside was a very young child whose parents were determined to enjoy their drinks even though their son was running around screaming, quite obviously very tired and needing to sleep, so they half-heartedly took him out into the hallway but brought him back moments later. This detracted from the pleasant surroundings until they eventually gave up! Breakfast in this lounge was also more than adequate with choices to suit everyone, hot and cold, healthy and slightly less healthy! Staff were all very helpful and seemed to know the answer to any question! We did two of the Berlin Walks and would highly recommend them, "Discover Berlin" and "Potsdam". The hotel is within a short walk of Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg Gate etc. and Unter den Linden is a beautiful area to walk around only minutes away. Buy a Berlin Welcome Card at the airport as it covers all transport systems and savings on many attraction charges. Incidentally, the train, subway and bus systems are to die for! I am sure they are the envy of most big cities, very efficient and frequent. This city has not given itself over to the car, thank goodness. Can't wait for another chance to visit Berlin and to stay at the Hilton.
