We spent at the Kempinski Adlon over a long week end in May2013. On this occasion, I travelled with the extended family, so it can rapidly become a logistical nightmare when things don't 'click' as they should, but the staff at the Adlon made everything simple although what we were after was quite bespoke. The suites had to be close from each other, we had many requests for shows and visits, requiring a number of tickets to be purchased by the concierge, and the hotel made a number of restaurant bookings for us, all this in a way that made us feel like, there was nothing at all to it.
The Hotel location is just great, situated right at the heart of the (newly combined west and east) city. You're at walking distance from every important museums, tube station, bus stop, sightseeing buses, etc. The views from the hotel are really quite nice, with a great vantage point over the Branderburger Tor. Because you're in the middle of the state official, embassies and administrative district, the area is not really lively at night, but after a day out trekking, you're just happy to have a nice meal in the main restaurant (high ceelings, great service, good healthy food). Of course, the hotel will recommend the odd old brasserie if you want to dine out, but Berlin isn't known for its restaurants, so don't expect sparkles there... (They all seem to have the same typical regional menus designed around Wiener schnitzel and warm cucumber-popato salad for some reasons). The main restaurant serves breakfast in the morning. The buffet is good-ok, but without any wow factor to it. What is nice about the place is the space it gives to those who want a quiet time and (relative) intimacy, and the fact that service respects this.
The concierge service is 5*. Don't hesitate to use them. They will recommend things to do, places to visit, they will find way to get you in even if its fully booked, ... in short, they will take time to get it right. For example, don't hesitate to have them book opera tickets for you. They know how to do it right, and this, in my view, contributed greatly to the quality of our trip. The also got us a last minute slot at the Bundestag (the Parliament). I don't know how they did it, I won't ask...
The rooms are spacious, fonctional, almost a little on the standard side with their standard square shapes and austere decoration (hey, this is Germany all right), but after all the impression they leave on departure is agreeable. Ensuite bathrooms are really nice, showers are a treat. Put it this way: I have seen better rooms, especially better suites than this, but I was pleased about the leveĺ of service offered, and the quietness of the room. The rest of the family was pleased. No fault here.
The hotel offers a nice spa-pool area. The pool is beautiful for a quick swim after a day out. We did not order any room service, but our tea arrived promptly and ordering was easy.
A very good experience indeed. For us, the Adlon deserves its 5*, and we shall be back when in Berlin, whether for leisure, or business.
