The Altes museum offers a rich collection of Greek, Etruscan and Roman artefacts. It is probably one of the best museums in its field north of the Alps, that is, in relative terms. I was most impressed by the Hildesheimer silver treasure, a rich ensemble of plates, bowls, trays, cups, egg-holders and kind of other table accessoires that must have belonged to an elegant household in Hildesheim, provincial town of the Roman Empire. What is so surprising about this treasure is that it is incredibly modern in style (and consumption attitude). It is a bit like with the table silver collections from Christofle: If you have already the bowls, than you absolutely have to have the goblets that go with it; and then the elegant tray in different sizes and of course the egg-holders are also a must...I don't think that much has changed in that field over the last 2000 years.
