“Somebody there must love pink.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

Somewhere between Rock and Roll Phillipe Starck fashion and the Japanese love hotel, the nhow in Berlin is a reasonable option for the overnight traveller, or party barhopper. To be honest the quirkyness of the design didn't do much for the overall comfort of the room. The design of the room almost masks the fact that the rooms are still pretty small. I would have appreciated more room in the bed area and not in the shower which might have fit 3 people if i tried (see love hotel). As with most of the newer euro hotels the heating system is turned on for the whole hotel by the grand poobah downstairs, and as a result my central air room was a bit chilly for a Berlin spring night. This however might not have been an issue in the summer. the room seemed technologically sound, although free internet (thank you) was slow as molasses (thank you anyway). There wasn't much storage, but as an overnight guest I didn't really need any. The room seemed well suited for the 1 night stand, planned or unplanned. the real asset of the hotel in my opinion was the design of the main entrance, restaurant and bar area with high ceilings and a lovely view. the bar is a nice hang at night, and the breakfast was comprehensive. staff was friendly. Good experience at the nhow, but I wish i didn't feel like I was sleeping in a box of crayons.

You know this is not your average hotel when you see the reception desk - purple plastic and then when you walk into the lifts (orange, pink, yellow, green - take your pick) on your way to the very, very pink bedrooms. If bright is your thing then this is the place for you. Guitars, drum kits and keyboards in the large reception area also lend credence to the idea that this is a music hotel. Bedrooms do the job although bed space is at a premium so mind you don't bang your head on the walls that fit tight against either side of the bed. The bathroom makes the most of the space and the shower is good when you can figure out how to use it (and when it works). I was never convinced that the aircon worked but opening the window invited in the road noise from a busy main road. Breakfast is very good - plenty of choice on a self service basis - but trying to order the promised eggs of your choice proved impossible as the staff were too busy talking and avoiding eye contact. A good all round hotel and one probably best suited to businesses.

Room Tip: Overlooking the river would be a better bet than the road.

If you don't, this hotel is unlikely to be or you. This hotel is great to stay in if you love pink, you are a musician, you like the idea of having 24 carat gold flakes on french fries, you need to be near Kreuzberg, O2 world or any of the media areas on the river.

Staff are friendly and personable and the breakfast selection was good, although the service was really slow during my time here.

I unfortunately won't be back as the hotel just wasn't to my taste.

Room Tip: Bring a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the patterns on the floor

This hotel is for the young at heart and will keep you smiling the whole time your there. From the time you arrive this hotel will give you everything. The staff are very helpful and as for the bedrooms just go and book one ,fantastic colourful and if you like your music you could'nt pick a better hotel with its in room amps for your gutars brill.
Location is good for popping on a off the trains into the city but there is plenty of bars like the Yams beach bar which is right next to the berlin wall on the riverbank amazing party bar with great music and very resonable priced drinks.Very welcoming as was the NHow hotel ,brill time was had there and will be back there for sure.

This hotel is very very nice. The design is awesome and the best thing is if you are a musician then you can get instruments wherever you want inside the hotel.
They also have a recording studio inside the hotel which they rent.

The view on the river is really nice and the cuisine is good.

I would suggest it

I stayed here for 5 nights and I was disappointed that it's not a true 5 star hotel. There is no pool, no iron/ironing board in the room, no bath robes, there are so many things missing that any other 5 star would have... and what a TERRIBLE internet service, if you're lucky to even connect to it. To top it all, most of the rooms are PINK (sheets are pink, bathroom is pink, slippers are bright pink), but they went easy on the floor and walls... it's light pink.

The TV is setup inside a mirror and behind a glass, so unless there is absolutely no light in the room, you can't watch TV because of the glare. Design over functionality. The desk is mirrored and round *but not a full circle, more like... in the shape of a pregnant woman, I kid you not), it doesn't have space for you to place your mouse next to the laptop, or even to rest your arms.

The chairs are "designed" and are uncomfortable and unsuitable for sitting, much less for working. The bathroom is divided from the bedroom by a glass, milky in the middle but clear above and below. There is a glass door between the toilet and the bathroom, so in fact there is no privacy at all.

Breakfast isn't included in their rates and they charge 22€ per person for a buffet (below average, definitely not what you'd expect for 22€). However there is an alternative to having breakfast there, Universal's building is next to it and has a bar and cantina where you can have your breakfast for less than half the price. The cantina is surprisingly good and cheap.

The hotel is located in the industrial part of Friedrichshain and most of the guests are there because of their conference halls or because they made the same mistake I did thinking it was a 5 star resort. There is a train/U-Bahn station that is around 8-10 min walk, but the area in general isn't nice. Graffiti all over the place, low end restaurants, donerias, a few homeless people, and after 6pm you'll see LOTS of people drinking beer on the streets, I know this is common in Berlin, but this area seems to be popular in that regard.

Overall I wouldn't recommend staying here, there are better 4 stars and 5 stars in Friedrichshain.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that isn't pink, you'll get sick after 5 minutes in one of those.
