I visited this restaurant last week, being sited opposite the NH Hotel Friedrichstrasse. The establishment is well placed to attract both tourist and local business, being adjacent to Friedrichstrasse station (southeast exit), located under the railway arches of the S-bahn. The size of the restaurant was a complete surprise given it’s exterior, I think it could easily accommodate 200 covers, so was ideal for a large group. The staff were very attentive and made sure that drinks were replenished without request, which was a nice touch.
I thought the food itself was uninspiring – the starter consisting of shredded salad served with a drizzle of mayonnaise was something I’d never consider eating for lunch, let alone serving to a guest – but this is typical German food, and at least it was healthy. The entrees arrived in huge plates and consisted of the usual German stodge, covered in cream but there were no complaints. Having devoured a plateful of cream for the main course I decided to give the dessert a miss, which I realised was a mistake as soon as I saw others digging into gargantuan portions of apfelkuchen, which I have to say looked absolutely delicious.
If you’re going to try this restaurant, I’d recommend either sticking to the main course only, or the salad starter and dessert unless you really enjoy feeling stuffed to the gills! The food has no pretensions and makes a refreshing change from “haute” cuisine, which is great in this day and age; I have no doubt that I’ll return, and make sure that I’m hungry when I do. By all means give it a go if you’re suffering a serious calorie deficit, but it’s not the kind of place you’d want to go to every night of the week unless you have aspirations towards obesity. That’s all I’m saying!
