“Great Value Generous helpings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

Read a few comments about brusque service and it nearly put us off going. Looked at all the menus in the area ,observed the food on the tables in the surrounding streets and decided to go for the most interesting Berlin food. This was the right decision.
Staff really good as we always try to engage.. the response and service was excellent.
But the factor was the food Fresh herrings superb..huge 3 big fillet serve with lovely salad, potatoes etc. The herring taste for a fish lover heavenly. The Deer,Wild Pig combo gigantic delicious and accompanied with tasty mushrooms, red cabbage and interesting potatoes.Total cost 24 euros. An absolute bargain plus drinks

“So cozy, so good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

The atmosphere makes you feel in a friends home. The tables are partially in niches. The waiters are friendly with humor. The food was German but very delicious. The portions won't leave you hungry.

“Nice local Berlin restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013

My wife recently visited Berlin on vacation. While there, we enjoyed dinner one evening at Mutter Hoppe at the recommendation of a tour guide. He suggested that it as a more "local" restaurant, rather than a tourist destination, so we were excited to try it, and we were not disappointed.

Both the service and the traditional German food was quite good, and the atmosphere was cool. My wife had the rouladen (thin strips of rolled steak), and I tried the eisbien (pig nuckle) and sauerkraut. Mine was the highlight of the meal, but both were good.

If you're looking for a good, reasonably priced, traditional German meal in Berlin, I'd put Mutter Hoppe on your consideration list.

“Bit of a disappointment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

Visited this place after seeing the reviews, and it was fairly close to our hotel. Great location near Alexanderplatz, and the weather was lovely so we sat outside. Service was professional and curteous without being particularly friendly and our order arrived quickly. The food just wasn't very good. Yes, the portions were huge - my husband's wild boar would happily have fed a family of four, and I've never seen so many brussels sprouts on a single plate before! The vegetables were very overcooked though, and everything was heavily salted - imagine an old-fashioned UK pub serving slightly processed carvery meals and you'll get the idea.

“Great food, great Berlin atmosphere!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2013

Don't miss this restaurant if you want to experience what Berliners like to eat and how they like to spend time with their friends and family. The menu presents all very German and very Berlin specialties - lots of potatoes (after all this is the heart or the former Prussia where potatoes were first introduced from the New World by Frederick the Great), lots of hearty meats, red cabbage, sauerkraut, but also many dishes with fresh vegetables and a few fish dishes. Some dishes come with rice, but don't look for pasta here! Wine and beer are outstanding, service is great and the food is plentiful and totally delicious. Given all that, the prices are quite reasonable and the restaurant is well located in the Nikolaiviertel, close to the Rote Rathaus and the Alexanderplatz. We ate there in the middle of the week and the restaurant was packed with Berliners who were taking their families and friends out for a meal. The place is decorated like old style Berlin eateries and pubs with lots of photos of the old Berlin. It may be a problem finding an empty table!
