“Hotel/hostel crossover in Prenzlauerberg Berg”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013 via mobile

We stayed as a school group here in February 2013. The chain styles itself somewhere between a hostel and a hotel, so a mix of private rooms and dorm rooms are available.

The whole hotel is relatively new and clean. Reception staff are multilingual and very helpful, selling transit tickets and providing info on the neighbourhood.

A reasonable buffet breakfast is provided. It's mostly meats, cheese and breads but well stocked and well maintained. Because of the large number of groups in the hotel, breakfast needs to be scheduled for everyone except individuals and families, and inconvenient wristbands have to be worn throughout your stay to indicate entitlement to breakfast. There's also a guest kitchen in the basement if you want to self cater.

Downsides are the large groups themselves - ill mannered and/or noisy school children or students are a given. The hotel also offers comprehensive free wifi throughout the hotel, but it seems to come under strain in some areas, constantly dropping out in our rooms.

The location is excellent for walking and touring, and the northern exit of Senerfeldplatz U-Bahn (U2) is right outside.

There is a big security problem at the Meininger Prenzlaurberg in Berlin. Don't leave anything valuable in the rooms, even at breakfast time. The rooms are systematically accessed by people looking for anything they can steal. I was lucky because I had my luggage cable-locked to a bed frame but they had a good go at trying to get the lock off. My colleagues have had similar experiences on different trips.

Stayed here as part of a stag do. It is a great location, with good bars nearby. The town centre is not too far to walk into either. The restaurants nearby are good too, with a good variety of prices, so you can choose what you want to pay. The hotel staff were welcoming and good at describing where places were. The bar in the hotel was convenient too and reasonably priced. We had a room of 3 and it was ample space for what we needed and clean too.
Try to get a private room if possible, one of the group stayed in a shared dorm and there was a few issues with some of the other guests in the room, but that is the gamble with a dorm. This was more reflective of the guests and not the hotel.

We have stayed there four nights (the longest of last years).
We found this hotel through Eurail, and found decent reviews of it.
The only good thing is its location on top of the subway station (2 stations away from Alexanderplatz). This place cannot be called a 'hotel', but a hostel (at best).
Although booking a double room, we got a room with two single beds put together and another double-decker bed. The towels are of lowest quality and are as thick and pleasant as sand paper.
The shower looked fine until you actually used it. Every 10-15 seconds the water stops and you have to press it again and again.
The mattress is very hard, and the sheets suffer from over and excessive laundry - they are coarse and filled with small cloth-balls. The pillows are simply terrible. They are approx 60x60 cm, and extremely thin.
On both sides of the bed there are night lights that did not work. Also after stating it to the receptionist which wrote it down, it was not fixed.
As for the staff they are not professionals and are not knowledgable or service oriented.
The majority of the so-called hotel were kids, so the patience of the staff was minimal.
The hotel offer wifi service for free, but it gets disconnected many times and you have signal reception problems in the room.
In the room they have installed 19" computer screens as tv's that offer an anti-viewing experience. Also, 97% of the channels are in German and not a single one in English.
The breakfast offers a variety of options, not a large one but sufficient (5.90 euros).
They also offer self service laundry at the basement (when I write self service it really is self service- the staff did not know even where the detergent should go in the machine).
If you want, two blocks away there is a Kaiser's supermarket with everything.
The elevators are especially slow, and the staircase is very steep.
When we came back the second evening we were amazed to find that they have not changed our towels, even though we used one of them for the flow in the bathroom.

The rate they took was 87 euros per night, and I strongly recommend going elsewhere.
For this price you can find a better hotel, in a better location, with better rooms and better service.

Room Tip: You can find many good rooms in Berlin. Simply not here.

We were expecting a hostel - Meininger thinks its a hotel! For the price we paid (booked online months ago) we have a private room with toilet and shower (there are 3 of us in a 4 bunk room for 15€ a night) What's not to like? As others have said its in a handy location, staff are helpful - got free wifi - its clean - we'd definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: 305 is on the road side and if you have the window open traffic noise may be a factor (no A/C)

Three shared a private room in Meininger Hostel. The room actually had 6 beds, two bunks and two twin size beds. Nice location, very close to the train station. Pretty centralized for as large as Berlin is. Room was clean, had a private bathroom. Towels/sheets were provided. Staff was very helpful. They have free WIFI in the lounge that is downstairs.

Near transport into the centre, or just a fifteen minute walk. Loads of bike rental places around if you'd rather make it five.
Very friendly helpful staff keen to tell you everything about the city enabling you to have the best time, whatever your interests.
I stayed with girlfriend for two nights in amongst a dorm. There is a large kitchen area which you can store food in and use to prepare meals. Also a very large common area with computer terminal access (you can pay for an hours internet vouccher at reception), don't know about wireless.
Very economically priced. Rooms could have been a little bigger and imaginative, but compfortable and perfunctory enough.
This is a large property however, with many rooms per floor, so if there are noisy people staying, you may very well notice it!

Room Tip: Ask to stay in a floor that has as little other people staying on it. Also, the hostel is actualy s...
