“Hotel close to the city center and the castle, small but fine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2010

The hotel Grüner Baum is located close to the city center of Würzburg. Bars and restaurants are in short walking distance. For those of you who like castles, the hotel is very close to the 'Marienfeste', an old and very large stronghold. If you come closer to the castle, you surely doubt that anyone could have won in a siege against this battlements.

We have been to Würzburg for an event in the restaurant of the 'Marienfeste'. As this hotel is very close, we needed 15 minutes by foot to climb up the hill towards the fortress. During winter-times there are no guided tours, but starting at the end of March again.

We have been in teh hotel for one day and we did not test the restaurant. We did however have one of the best buffet-breakfasts money can buy. For the price of 85€ for the room and 10€ for the breakfast for two persons, price-performance ratio can not be bet.

Parking in the rear of the hotel costs 3€ but it can happen that other people park behind you so that you can not leave immedeately. I recommend the closed garage which costs 8€ per day. You can also find other parking possibilities for free but only during evening and night times.

The rooms are small but comfortable. The bathroom is small as well but ours was newly renovated. From the outside the hotel looks old but in my opinion it is a hidden gem. You will not find another hotel in this area this cheap but still not shabby nor scary. The interior of the hotel is well maintained and old chairs or other things in the floors add to the kind of medievil charm of the hotel.

Each room has a minibar with surprisingly cheap prices (Beer 2€, chocolate bar 0,70€) and a small TV with many stations. The room itself apart from the bathroom is not new but not old or dirty.

The personnel is friendly and even accompanies you by foot to the garage so that you find the right way. You can get a complimentary map of Würzburg if you need one, all in all a very friendly atmosphere.

The breakfast buffet was large with much choices of bread, rolls and fruit. They have large cheese and sausage plates as well as cereals and yoghurt. You can have milk and juices, coffee and tea. Did I tell you that the breakfast takes place in an old vault?

So as I said, I can recommend the hotel to everyone who comes to Würzburg for a short trip, maybe over the weekend.

We spent two nights in this hotel and I wish we had of stayed longer. The staff was helpful, friendly and spoke good English. They made our family (with young children) feel welcome and not a burden. The room was comfortable, clean, and recently decorated to a high standard and excellent taste. The hotel overall was also decorated to a high standard with consideration to the buildings history and culture, yet very modern and comfortable. The hotel is on a main street and there was some noise, but this was not a problem overall. Breakfast was more than expected - a great variety of fruit, meats, cheese, yogurt, cereals, and the best baked bread/croissants I have had in ages. Overall, this is a great place to stay and very good value for money. We will stay here again without a question.

We paid 90 euro, it was not good value for money.
There was no internet access, no airconditioning.
Tiny shower room and tiny TV.
In Aug, the room can be very hot..

However staff are very kind and helpful, good location, nice breakfast.

My wife and I loved this hotel. The service was great, and the people who worked there were kind and helpful. Breakfast was fantastic. As others have mentioned, the hotel is on a main street and we could hear cars in the evening, although it was perfectly quiet at night. We could hear the church bells at 8 in the morning, but that's not such a bad way to wake up! Our room was large, clean, very comfortable beds (two single mattresses together, but arranged in such a way that we could barely feel the join), well decorated, and a bath as well as a shower.

The hotel is situated in a great place, just over the old bridge from the old town (and so I'm sure that it's far quieter at night than places within the old town itself). It's a very easy walk to everywhere you might want to go.

You can also get a tram (the number 2) directly to the train station; the tram comes every 15 minutes, and the tram stop is just a short walk away. There's even a bus that takes you directly to the Residenz (a palace that's well worth seeing), although that only comes about once every hour. To find the tram and bus stops just turn left from the hotel, and walk for 5 minutes.

Some excellent restaurants: Alte Mainmuhle (on the bridge itself), Backofele (lovely, with excellent food), Marktbarbl (where we ate really good fish), and Burgerspital (looks odd from outside, but is very nice inside).

  • Liked — The breakfast was superb!
  • Disliked — Having to leave

We spent just one night here in May enroute to Frankfurt from Rothenburg. The hotel room was fairly small, but very clean, pretty and comfortable. Our room was at the front of the hotel, and overlooked a quite busy and noisy road, although the noise died down after evening rush hour. The lady on reception here was outstandingly kind and helpful to us, she gave us directions to everything we needed, and offered to serve us with an early breakfast the next morning in order for us to catch an early train to Frankfurt. Breakfast the next morning was eye-bulgingly excellent! Best we had in whole of Europe - if we had not been on such a tight schedule, we could have stuffed ourselves to the gunwhales! It is an easy 10 - 15 minute walk over the bridge into the CBD, and a further 10 minutes or so to the Residenz. There are a few eateries closer to home, and a nice Konditorei just down the road which is open during the day. The hotel does not provide internet.

The room, however, was quite small and on the street side so too warm with the window closed and too noisy with the window open. A good room for someone small with eyeshades and earplugs, but everything else was super and because of the location and the staff, I'd go back again as it's almost right across from the Old Main bridge and its entrance into the old town.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Gruener Baum. As other reviewers have mentioned, the hotel is located on a busy street so get a clear understanding as to where it is before you get there because you can't stop (or park) in front of the hotel as there is no place for that.

Once you get in to the lobby, however, your Gruener Baum experience begins. The staff is extremely pleasant and seemingly excited that you are there. You won't need your car because the hotel is conveniently located just across the bridge from the main part of town.

The staff gave us some maps and great recommendations about places to visit and eat (Don't miss having a meal at Backofele!) which added immensely to our visit.

As others have stated the breakfast was delightful and was a great part of an enjoyable stay.

We would happily stay there again.
