“Lovely Place to Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

My husband and I prefer to stay in smaller hotels which offer more of a chance to experience the community we are visiting. The Hotel-Gasthof Klingentor was perfect for us. Our hosts were friendly and welcoming. Our room was spacious and comfortable. While the property is outside of the Rothenburg wall, it is a very short walk and we found the location to be very convenient. Breakfast was very nice. I notified the owners ahead of arriving that I require a gluten free diet and I was served the best gluten free bread I have ever had. For travelers looking for luxury accommodations, this location may be disappointing. However, we loved the homey, gracious atmosphere.

We checked into this hotel about 3 in the afternoon. What a nice surprise. The owner and his wife are great people and we couldn't have asked for a nicer stay. The rooms were very spacious by European standards and the breakfast was a large hearty one, with our table reserved by room number. A nice touch was the placement of the country flags of guests at the tables. Breakfast was typical German - yoghurt, cheese, meats, hard boiled eggs, and a wide assortment of breads, way too much to eat for our party of 4. The only negative I can think of is that parking was a bit tight, but adequate. The owner in fact assisted with parking to make sure the car would fit in the spot he chose for us. We would definitely stay here again if we are ever in the area.

When we got off the train in Rothenburg we walked to the hotel. It was a bit of a hike carrying our bags but a nice walk along the city wall. We were greated by Mr. Wagenländer. he was the nicest person we had encountered our entire trip to europe. He checked us in, handed us several brochures and circled the highlights of town on the map for us. We were there for 1 night and almost stayed a 2nd night. The city was beautiful, I was hoping to see something an old medival town would have like a blacksmith ect. Most of the stores were beautiful old buildings and the wall was amazing. My wife and I really enjoyed walking around the top of the city wall. The morning we went down for breakfast and they had assigned tables with breakfast ready for us, and each table had a small flag with the country each visitor is from. We were the only Americans. They locked our bags up so we could enjoy the city for the day before we left. the city was nice at sunset, bu the hotel and its owners were amazing! We will go visit again.

Firstly a little help locating the entrance, as it is not at the front, you have to go down the side street a few feet to the car park entrance, you will see a little half barrier, the entrance is on the right. Greeted by a very friendly man, who had tourist info (in English) ready for us, with the position of the hotel marked on the map, and he proceeded to tell us what was where. The room was very large and charming, maybe a little old fashioned for some, but not for us. No flat pack furniture here, just good old fashioned wooden craftsmanship, as for the bathroom, I have stayed in hotels where the room was not this big, Twin sinks, a bath and separate shower unit and a urinal as well as the toilet. The location was also great, a minutes walk from the walled old town. We had a lovely breakfast, then we wanted to go back into the town, even after we checked out he said it was no problem to leave the car in the car park while we had a further look around this wonderful town.

We were supposed to spend 2 nights here, however, weather changed our plans. We could only stay one night and we were able to cancel at no charge using our smart phone in the airport. The hotel is very clean and spacious. It's about a block outside the Rothenburg walls. The breakfast is huge and yummy. Owners are very friendly at check-in and breakfast. We were able to use their bikes at no charge. The hotel has a country feel.

Hotel-Gasthof Klingentor is one of the best value B&B's I have ever stayed in. It sits just outside of one of the main gates to the old city, so the location is superb. We stayed in an ensuited room which was very large (both the bedroom and adjoining bathroom) and clean. Previous reviews in relation to the size of the breakfast are extremely accurate. The food just keeps on coming and is high quality and delicious. Breads and bread rolls, boiled eggs, various selections of meats, yoghurt, fruits, tea, coffee, jams etc etc - just so much food! The owners are helpful and slightly madcap (particularly at breakfast when trying to feed you more food!) In summary, if you're looking for a quiet guesthouse that is great value and in a great location, you can't really beat this.

You really breathe the history of this pension, managed by an old couple. Rooms and service are old fashioned but pleasant, breakfast is huge and delicious, there is a nice feeling that you can find anymore in modern hotels. We'll send a postcard to the owners, looks like from the guestbooks from the 80s that it's a nice to have.
