“80 Hotels in Rothenburg-Why Choose This One?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2014

Choose this hotel in Rothenburg if you like a cozy, friendly, comfortable and charming place to stay. As others note, the building is 700 years old. The rooms are immaculate and comfortable. The owner, Axel is welcoming and does everything possible to assure guests are comfortable. Breakfast was great. There is not a lights out at 7 policy as mentioned by others. It is true that if no additional guests are to check in, the lobby is not attended later in the evening. Your room key accesses the hotel entrance and automatic lights come on. This is not creepy but a fairly common practice for small establishments in Europe. The hotel is conveniently located. We were delighted in every way and would love to return.

Room Tip: Rooms on floor 3 have slanted cielings. This is quant, but if you don't like it ask for a room o...

We did not stay here, but our guide told us it was the best streudel in Rothenburg, she was not wrong. Apfel Streudel, homemade, served with cream and icecream 3.80 euros. We had coffee with it, and had an amazing dessert experience. This hotel is in the same street as the Christmas shop and Teddyland. This is a great stop after retail therapy.

Room Tip: Eat inside in the quiet library area, away from the crowds on the street.

It was our second stay in that wonderful hotel. More than 700 years old building amazes it's stylish interior and fantastic bathroom. Perfect location, great views from the upper levels of hotel. Very friendly atmosphere provided by the owner - Mr. Axel Rüter and one of his assistants - a girl in "dirndl".

Rothenburg is by far one of the most beautiful fairy tale like cities in Europe a must go. However, look elsewhere for your stay. This hotel is well located and clean but you must endure a lights out at 7pm policy. If you are ok with the eerie feeling of walking out to an empty dark lobby every night then it's on your list. We selected this inn looking for a chance to meet locals and experience Bavarian hospitality, instead we found a stand offish, bitter inn keeper upon arrival. We arrived at 7:45 after a 5 hour drive from Berlin. We entered an empty semi lit lobby where a man awaited us. Our expedia reservation showed only 2 guests in error as we were traveling with my 12 year old daughter. Instead of a warm welcome and empathy for our long voyage we were told your reservation says 2 but you are 3. We explained that was an error and asked if there were no rooms to accommodate us. He repeated it says 2. I repeated ok but we are 3 do we need to go to another hotel. He said no but you must pay higher rate. Ok however this was already the most expensive hotel in Rothenburg the days of our stay. We then noticed how ridiculous this exchange was when we noticed the hotel was about 60 percent vacant. Our room was huge size was not a problem. The room was very clean, decor charming until we noticed suspiciously familiar helmet in our room very reminiscent of German WWII army issue minus the swastika but with infantry badge on the side, gave us the creeps. On our second day we enjoyed a full day out in the town and returned at 8 to a completely dark lobby with no attendant. In addition there is no TV in English or other language then german, so my daughter and I spent the night sharing stories and reading only to receive a knock at 9:45 from room next door asking us to keep it down. No music was blaring, no TV on no yelling just our voices at a normal tone. The next morning we had breakfast in empty dining room and selected table from previous day that was set for four however the waitress/hostess/receptionist/cook/ all one person explained we must select other table as we were party of three. Guess odd numbers are an issue in this creepy hotel. BtW even though it was the low season other hotels and restaurants in the town were lively with lights on and welcoming. Do look elsewhere we will return to this lovely town and do so.

We lucked into a stay at this quaint inn by going during the slow season, early March. The room was tight, but the bathroom was fabulous. The bed was the mist comfortable we had in our 8 day journey in Germany and Holland. The location is perfect and parking was close by (5 euro charge).
The only slight complaint would be the smell of cigarette smoke upon check in. I saw the manager light up a couple times close to the door, but not outside.

Exuding charm from every corner, Hotel Gotisches Haus was the most incredible and restful place we stayed while in Europe. We had a room with a balcony and enjoyed evenings sitting outside overlooking the rooftops of the town while sipping a bottle of wine. Our time there couldn't have been any more wonderful.
The room was lovely with a small sitting area in addition to the bed area. The bathroom was spacious and the rooms were quite clean. The hotel itself is quite historic and it was good to see everything kept that way. Everything you need for a comfortable stay is "modern," yet the hotel retains its historic look and feel. For instance, there is a small lift for when you are transporting luggage up and down to your room, but when you don't have any luggage, be sure to walk the stairs. The heavy timbers and the sparsely, yet distinctively decorated landings are worth seeing.
The lobby and breakfast area feels like a museum (I saw more than one small tour group quietly pass through admiring the surroundings). The breakfast was wonderful and the staff is more than accommodating.
The location can't be beat, right in the heart of where you want to be and yet the street is nice and quiet. Parking was available nearby; the Hotel staff gave us a pass to put in our car windshield while there (we never used our car once in town).
We will revisit Rothenburg o.d.T. this year and the first thing I did was to check availability at Hotel Gotisches Haus. Alas! No rooms available, but mark my words, we will return!
Tip: Be sure to walk the wall! So much to see - from the wall, on the wall... And the views are wonderful in both directions! And whatever you do, don't miss the Night Watchman's Tour! Enjoy!
