“Seriously awesome. You should experience this.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

My husband booked this accommodation so I did not know what to expect. He told me that we were staying in a castle and I had my doubts about the authenticity of it. I was thrilled to find that the castle was a legitimate castle dating back to the 1100's. The rooms are not still in castle style- they have carpets, regular bathrooms, etc. The exterior of the castle as well as most of its interior has been preserved and I would encourage you to take the tour to see it all. It was fascinating. I was very happy we stayed here. Plus the view of the courtyard was awesome!

My wife and I took a chance in Germany recently, by not booking a hotel in advance, because we weren't exactly sure what town we would be in come nightfall. We were on a drive on the Romantic Road from Bad Mergentheim to Fussen. It turned out we were near Hamburg when we were ready to settle in, and we found Fuerstliche on our cell phone Wi-Fi. Fortunately, they had a room, and the cost was very affordable.

It was like a dream. We drove up the hill to the imposing castle, and parked and went into the hotel which is inside the walls. The Staff was very friendly, and helped us with an internet cable, along with just being very friendly with the room selection. The room itself was small, as is typical in Europe, but it had all the comforts, and who in their right mind could complain about having to stay in a castle? We had dinner at the hotel, and it was very good and the waitress was very friendly, including helping us with our selections with English translations, to the best of her abilities.

Minor inconveniences such as lack of elevator should only deter those who have disabilities. Overall, the room was comfortable, tastefully decorated, clean, and we felt like we had been very fortunate to land in Harburg Castle's Fuerstliche Burgschenke Hotel for the evening.

The next day, we took a tour of the castle which was very interesting. We did this after breakfast at the hotel, which was the typical meat/cheese breakfast you find in Germany, but with enough extras to satisfy our appetites.

Fürstliche Burgschenke Harburg is a simple yet cozy family-run hotel inside the picturesque Harburg castle. It may feel rustic but is clean and well-maintained by a caring and friendly family, and is endowed with a very good Schwabian restaurant.

This inn occupies a building in the Harburg castle, which is strategically located between Nördlingen and Donauwörth along Wörnitz River. It is about 20 minutes of walk from the Harburg train station, and makes a great stop along the Romantic Road (Romantische Straße). Especially for travelers on the Romantic Road coming from the North, we would recommend coming to Harburg and staying overnight in the castle after seeing Nördlingen. While the town itself is very small, there are some truly beautiful spots, one of them being a small park adjacent to Wörnitz River and Grasstraße, with a scenic view of the town and the castle. The views from the castle are also great, and spending a night in the castle is certainly worth the inconvenience of having too few bakeries and marts around.

Our room was simply furnished but had nice views of the castle courtyard, and was surprisingly warm and cozy for a centuries-old building. The bathroom was very small and had little amenities or toiletries to speak of, but was clean and functional. The room has a complimentary bottle of water, which is nice since it is rather hard to find marts and shops in the small town. The said building does not have an elevator, and thus may not be ideal for some disabled visitors.

On the ground floor of the building is a Schwabian provincial restaurant run by the same family. The restaurant has nice ambience, and offers great food at very reasonable price. The chef has a discerning taste and manages to lift those simple traditional dishes well above the banal gut-clinging German country cuisine. Breakfast is served in a cozy room next to the restaurant hall, and has good selection.

To summarize, Fürstliche Burgschenke Harburg is a rustic yet clean hotel inside an authentic medieval castle, coupled with a very good provincial restaurant. The combination of a hearty, satisfying dinner and an atmospheric night in a millennia-old castle provides too memorable an experience to miss, and this is why we would recommend this lodging as an overnight stop along the Romantic Road, in-between other nights in Dinkelsbühl and Augsburg.

Room Tip: Room 2 is the tower room. Room 7 perhaps has the best views of the castle among the other rooms.

My husband's brother got married in Nordlingen and the reception was in the castle in Harburg. The castle was beautiful, and the tour provided a lot of history. We had some translators attending the wedding so they were able to translate the tour, but even of you do not speak German they have an English handout that provided the information given during the tour. The food catered during the reception was very tasty, and I assume it was catered by the hotel. The rooms were comfortable for being located in a 900 year+ old castle. The beds were actually pretty comfortable.

A unique experience that we enjoyed.

We travelled here from Rothenburg (down the Romantic Road) in December 2012, for a 1 night stay. It was extremely snowy and the little town appeared to be completely closed. We took a guess as to the location of the hotel – headed for the castle overlooking the town. It was a bit too snowy to get through the castle gate, up the cobbled path, to the top so we parked near the bottom and decided to get out and walk to explore. There was absolutely no one around – it was extremely quiet and there didn’t appear to be an obvious hotel entrance! It was very surreal. We eventually stumbled along the cafe/hotel entrance; it was quite basic and cold with a lot of dark wood around (fairly old-fashioned). There was an unfortunate smell of cafe/stale cigarettes (this permeated the whole place).
We stayed in the tower room – unfortunately it was a little cold as they hadn’t expected us to arrive so early (a lot of heat disappeared from the little tower windows, and the lower area of the room remained cooler, but it warmed up greatly during the night and was quite toasty). The bed was in a lower area and there was a small upper area with a table and chairs etc. and a teeny shower room with toilet (very basic). Unfortunately there was no wifi and no English speaking tv channels. We had a small walk in the snow and a quick drive around the town but, sadly, there didn’t seem to be an awful lot to do. We felt a little isolated.
On the plus side, it was a unique experience and the staff were lovely and accommodating (ask for a hairdryer and they’re happy to give you one). We had an early meal in the restaurant downstairs (weren’t sure where else to go!) where they had obviously made a huge effort with our table decorations (with free chocolates etc.) – it was a good choice (and appeared to be very popular with the locals). It had great service and the food was equally good (especially for the price) – the dessert of waffles, cherries and icecream was the best.
We don’t think there were many people staying in the hotel while we were there so it was nice and quiet. When we booked the tower room there was a note saying we would be ‘sleeping under the stars’. We didn’t quite understand this when we turned up and the room was your usual plastered ceiling (albeit a high one, and in a castle tower). We joked that it would be glow in the dark paint when we turned the lights off which turned out to be correct! But, put in this way would be to undersell what was a nice feature and very well done (staff inform us it was done by a famous Austrian artists and took several weeks). It was definitely a talking point and unique.
In the morning they gave us a lift, with our luggage, down to the parked car (because of the snow) which was very kind of them. Check out time was at 11am. Breakfast was a good selection of usual fare.

A brilliant hotel located within the excellent medieval castle at Harburg. We had the tower suite which we found well worth spending a bit extra for, it has a beautiful circular bedroom and a nice living area as well. We ate in the hotel restaurant at the castle which was lovely, as was breakfast the next day. Would love to stay again!

We enjoyed a 1 night stay as traveling down the Romantic Road enroute to Fussen. The room was comfortable for our family of 4. Good restaurant to enjoy. No grounds to explore and views can only be obtained from the castle tour. Tour is not included in the overnight stay price (it should be) and no English tours available; German only.
