“Wonderful location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2011

My second stay at the hotel. You basically have to go through some of the pedestrian areas to get there - but they have parking in the back.
When you walk out their front door, you're in the middle og this beautiful German city.
You can by vouchers for the castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau at the reception desk, so you can skip the line and book a time without waiting at the castles. I bypassed at least 200m og people waiting in the sun :-)
Their breakfast is very nice, with a broad variety, and I just love how this place is run by the entire family.
Their restaurant is also very nice for evening eat-in - I prefer the veal schnitzel with roast potatoes and a nice big Weissbier on the side (or 3).
Lovely place for a vacation or even if you're just in need of a place to stay on the way to/from Italy.

We spent one enjoyable evening here. The room was clean and comfortable with free wifi internet.

The people who run this hotel are really the best. Friendly, helpful and kind. We arrived and the main road to the hotel had just been made into a pedestrian only road--apparently that day. I walked to the hotel and asked for assistance and the young man behind the counter provided a map and thorough directions for parking. He then went and met us at the parking area and helped with our bags up several flights of steps.

No elevators, but there was assistance up the steps. The attached restaurant is also very good and the free breakfast is served in an adorably decorated room. Typical German breakfast fare--very generous selections.

We didn't enjoy the town of Fussen that much, but it was a great place to stay to visit the Ludwig Castles, which we did the next day.

Spent two nights in this delightful family (3 generations on premises) run hotel. Included breakfast was wonderful with service provided by the grandparents. Had an excellent dinner in their family run restaurant adjacent to the lobby. Some rooms on front of building may have a problem as there are some very bright street lights right outside of the windows, but the rooms in back are spacious and quiet.

This was our second stay in the Hechten. We were happy to go back as it represents such good value for money, and the service from family members and long serving retainers is charming in an old fashioned way rarely found these days. Our room this time was in the new block at the back overlooking the car park, so no view towards the town schloss - but it had a balcony for late evening sun. We parked in the garage below our rooms rather than in the open parking area as that was full. We also got free wifi in our room as returning guests, but I think they charge for this normally.

If you plan to visit the nearby famous castles, do take up the hotel's reservation offer - for convenience and queue jumping benefits. Also, visit the local, town schloss and monastery, and try the local walks along the river - all details happily supplied from reception.

The hotel's own restaurant is also one of the better value places to eat in town if local, hearty but tasty fare is what you're happy with. The buffet breakfast is plentiful and well laid out, with a good selection of sweet and savoury cold choices. Fuessen is a charming small town with several fascinating old buildings, and in summer if you're lucky, you can enjoy a local beer or ice cream al fresco while listening to a local chamber orchestra perform classic, rousing Bavarian tunes.

This year we decided to take a lakes and mountains holiday instead of our usual beach holiday and drove down through France and Germany to Bavaria staying at this hotel for two nights before travelling on to Berchtesgaden by Lake Konigssee. The hotel was a little difficult to find and we had to ask at the tourist office how to get to it, they drew us a very helpful little map and we then found it straightaway and managed to park our car in the smallish car park at the rear. It was located in the town centre right by the shops. Our room was located on the first floor and was fairly small but clean and comfortable, however it overlooked a roof so we did not have a view. We ate at the hotel on each evening and it was really popular so much so that on the second evening we could not get a table and had quite a long wait to get a meal. I think the staff were a little stressed that evening because we were brought our first course and before we could even start it the waitress put our main course on the table! The gentleman on reception was very helpful when we asked about walks and he told us about several from easy to difficult. When we booked the hotel we booked the Neuschwanstein package and so vouchers for the castle were included. What a good thing we did because we hiked through the mountains to get to the castle and when we arrived in the village centre the queue to get tickets for Neuschwanstein & Hohenshwangau was really long. Because we had booked we were able to go to the head of the queue and get our tickets probably much to the consternation of the waiting crowds!
This is a very pleasant hotel handily situated for walking and sightseeing and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

The Altstadt Hotel zum Hechten is right off the main town square of Füssen. This is a nice 'gasthof' style hotel, with smaller rooms which are very clean and well-kept. I had a room in the back courtyard area (around the parking area). The staff was very friendly as well as helpful in answering questions and arranging for tickets to Neuschwanstein. The smallish restaurant serves up nice German fair, authentic and well-prepared, and they offer some local beer options as well. Breakfast was quite good, served by what seemed to be the whole family who operated the hotel. Füssen itself is a charming little town; often the overnight stay for visitors to the Ludwig castles, a stroll through the town center provides the visitor a nice glimpse of a middle age German city.

If you have decided to see Neuschwanstein Castle, I would recommend to stay in Fussen. It is a small and nice city in few km from the Castle. We stayed at its Zum hechten hotel. I don't like much the local traditional-style hotels, which is a matter of taste, the service was very impressing. Very warm and attentive staff and cozy rooms. Well, not freshly renovated, but with very very good service...
